And, let's face it, the "psychotically" as well...
Note: Okay, so I've been promising (or threatening, possibly) to write a crazy essay about Sam's love for Dean for awhile. In light of recent events (S6!Sam, the
wincon panel,
missyjack's
Sam meta, and
my own S6!Sam thoughts), I finally sort of got to it. I'm pretty sure there are a ton of things I meant to

Schoolwork does ruin all the fun. *pouts* It's the reason I'm being so slow on that project I talked to you about--hooopefully in November I will get a chance to finish it! ;D

Duuuuuuuuuuude! That's also kind of a huge project! I expected it to take some time. :D :D :D

I also think Sam is desperate for Dean to see him as not just the little bro whose care he was charegd with. He wants to be MAGNIFICENT for Dean. I think this is what drove him to continue with Ruby after Dean's return - to be an awesome hunter (just like Dean) esp following his failure to save dena from Hell.
And on the back of S5, of seeing Dean's belief in him waver, maybe thats driving whatever he's up to 9or deal his made) now.
I also think Sam was incredibly turned on by seeing BAMF vampire!Dean on his killing spree.

IAWTC!!! He wants Dean to depend on him a little, and the awesomely tragic thing is, Dean wants that too (like in Sex & Violence) but they can't manage to find a middle ground there. OH BOYS!!!
Oooooooooooh! I like that ideal.
HA! Even hairless cat!Sam finds BAMF vampire!Dean to be a hotass. There is no level of disconnect from one's emotions that could negate that level of hotassedness. Truefax.

so much of Sam's insistence on being stronger, being independent, and saving Dean was wrapped up in his grief at his previous failure to do so, his inability to rescue him from Hell, and wanting to prove to Dean that he could be relied on. Throughout S4 and S5, what Sam wants in his struggle for independence is for Dean to have the faith in Sam that Sam has always had in Dean.YES. Oh my god, Saaaaaam. He'd tried so hard, and it was so clearly rooted from the shitstorm of losing Dean. And maybe he wants Dean to see him as independent and strong so that Dean needs him/approves of him as more than just 'little brother' - he wants to be equal with Dean, loved and needed for who he is, not just his role as little brother, except at the same time he has grown so dependent on the love Dean gave him as the ( ... )

YES YES YES TO ALL OF THIS!!! And the thing is, Dean wants that, too, he just has NO IDEA how to go about it, and they keep missing each other because they are so hung up on their own issues and insecurities, but then they did sort of tentatively reach that level at the end of S5 and it was the most GLORIOUS THING EVER!!

This is the dynamic that fascinates me and yet I've never been able to voice it with any clarity. Their perpetual circle of disappointment in and faith in each other and themselves is delicious. Like you've said elsewhere, their fundamental misunderstanding of what makes the other tick also contributes heavily.
Actually, the show draws an unmistakable parallel between John/Sam and Mary/Dean. When faced with the loss of John/Sam, Mary/Dean made a stupid deal, one they knew better than to make, both having been raised as hunters. When faced with Mary/Dean's death, John/Sam went INSANE. Mystery Spot!Sam is a logical extension of what John would have been like had he not had Sam and Dean to look after. This! ( ... )

YESSSSSSSSSSS, HOMG, it's nearly pornographic in its deliciousness!!! Ummm, that's not just me, right?
Of course, I've been spending a pretty unreasonable stretch of time thinking about Mystery Spot and its implications WRT the Current State of the Sam.
I don't think there is an unreasonable amount of time that can be spent thinking about Mystery Spot!Sam...
I think it's a pretty important touchstone, actually, that people sometimes overlook entirely when evaluating Sam's character. John would totally have been Mystery Spot!Sam even with different motivations.
*nodsnodsnods* I think this is true in talking about John's character as well. He was by no means a perfect parent, but the extent to which Sam and Dean did keep him tied to the world is really pretty huge./tangent
I hope you have actually been working on this meta! I want to reaaaaaad it!!!

Not just you. :)

I have been mentally working on it, mostly at work. I'm trying to figure out the best structure. I may fire it off to you when I finish it unless you have an objection to getting at it first. Also, you can tell me when my Dean is showing. :)
