Last month, I read through an article at Gamasutra called Game Design Essentials: 20 RPGs. In it, the author discusses game design elements of influential RPG titles through the years. It was an interesting read, but something about it stuck with me. Compare his "analyses" of the following:

So, you think WoW is an easy mode MMO that rewards players by time invested rather than skill? But what about Ulduar? Sure, you have to do repeated soul-crushing grindfests through Heroic dungeons and Naxx, but eventually you get to move on to this exciting raid! *cue inspirational fanfare* New encounters to experience (over and over)! My copy of Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions arrived earlier this week. It's a revamping of one of my favorite games of all time (thanks, Koey) and pretty much the reason I bought a PSP. ( Mmm... )

My first assignment for Game Programming is to play a game and then write a review about it. How's that for homework?   :^)   And my order for Growlanser: Heritage of War arrived today. It's a sign! That should lighten up a weekend otherwise spent learning Python and studying automata theory and adversarial search AI.
