Blargh, the science fair edition

So, remember a while back when I proudly posted that the boy's science fair project had won first place in his grade, and he and the other first place winners from his school would be competing at the regional science fair this February ( Read more... )

I think that happened with Kaitlyn's art project, too. She was told that she would be advancing to regional and about a month ago she had her artwork and a "Congratulations" certificate crammed her in backpack with a First Place ribbon. She was heartbroken.

It's just very disrespectful. I doubt they'd think it was appropriate to treat an adult that way.

The school's science fair coordinator didn't even bother to tell me - I looked up the regional schedule online, and became concerned when I didn't see kindergarten listed. I wonder if they would have gotten around to telling me eventually, or if they would have let us show up at registration and be turned away.

Absolutely. When I called Kaitlyn's school to figure out what happened they acted like we should have known what was going to happen.

I'm sorry to hear that it happened at other schools. I don't think they realize how excited the little kids got about the idea of their projects advancing.

I think maybe they get so jaded with the repetition of it all that they start to forget. Yes, this might be the millionth stick figure family portrait they've seen. That doesn't change the fact that, to the kid who made it, it's special.

On top of that is the fact that kids need to know that when you tell them something is going to happen, they need to be able to trust you at your word.

Well, yes.

But in addition, he get a "my first chemistry" kit from us for Giftmas, and he gave Red a book of kids' science experiments to do at home (the pictures seem heavy on the "craft project" aspect).

I see a volcano in our future, just as soon as it's not stupidly cold outside. Tuesday he was telling me about a water vapor experiment he'd seen somewhere that he wants to do. Yay doing stuff! Yay learning by accident while you make a huge mess!

Volcano is on the way!! captainwhimsy January 16 2009, 16:05:25 UTC
At the National Gallery of Art I purchased a "Pocket Volcano" for Andrew. ( And I can't help thinking: "Is that a volcano in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?")

Stock up on baking soda and vinegar, this baby's gonna blow!!
