Oooh! Wonderfully sinister. You do dark-fic so very well. I love every bit of this. The black seed beneath his skin is such a perfect metaphor and so chilling--like a terminal disease.

I also love your picture of Jack's decision at Isla de Muerta.
A chance at immortality flavored with ashes, or a quick life before the wind, with death's shadow in his wake,
That is beautifully said and so clearly reveals his choice. Without reading further we know. Like Ulysses, Jack is one who drinks life to the lees.

the Devil might just slip up
How very Jack, to always be looking for that opportune moment--never quite resigned to the gallows, always pursuing the edge of the earth.

Wonderful! Say thank you to your muses for me. I'm glad they are pestering you again.

Like Ulysses, Jack is one who drinks life to the lees.

There are definitely some parallels there, aren't there?

Glad you enjoyed! I like me some dark-fic from time to time, and I've had a craving for dark!Jack lately, and I've had that image from the trailer of the Black Spot on Jack's palm. I'm glad the muses are back, myself. I'm running with it, because who knows when they'll take off again.

It had been tempting, all too tempting, back there at Isla de Muerta, to trade a life-debt for a half-life. Did one curse cancel out another? If he couldn't die, could his doom still claim him? The whole Jolly Roger look had suited him, really. He had the bone structure for it, after all.

I love that paragraph, the dark humor of it, the truth of it.

This was beautifully done, reading almost like poetry. We're so happy your Muse is speaking again!

I'm happy the Muse has returned as well. I think it's the scent of new canon that lured it back!

Thank you for reading and commenting!

The devil would only slip up for Jack. He'd probably kiss him on the nose and he wouldn't know what had hit him. ^^
Lovely.

Thank you!

I like to believe Jack cheats both Death and the Devil and lives forever. He's still out there somewhere, him and his Pearl, sailing for the horizon.

Oh! What a lovely thought! Perhaps he stops by in reality now and again, that fleeting figure that's too beautiful to look at, who moves in shadows and touches you on those days you can't quite remember. I hope he finds another lost soul to keep him company.^^

Now that was a lovely turn of phrase! I believe it. :-)

i've always been of those who thinks that if anyone could talk the devil outta claiming his due, it'd be jack-darling -- but this piece, this beautiful, dark piece...it's a fascinating glimpse into his head, chock full of underlying longing and horrible expectancy, and brutal realness. i love fics that bring to light the fact that jack isn't infallible, and that he realises it but isn't willing to let it eat at him, as surely any lesser man would allow.

the bill reference was the icing on the cake, by the way. so very bill, warning jack like that.

lovely job. ♥

Thank you so much! It occurred to me that Jack must know, throughout the first movie, that he owes his life/soul to Davy Jones (although I'm assuming that he makes this deal pre-series.) You don't forget a thing like that. And yet he just goes on being Jack, as if his soul and his fate are still his own.

Glad you liked the Bill reference. I wasn't sure if it fit, but there it stuck.

Oooh. A glimpse into the invisible, yet ever-present darkness that plagues our dear captain. Right on, love. You've succeeded in flawlessly capturing that which is so very hard to pin-point. I commend thee.

I love the way you explained the motive behind his actions at Isla de Muerta. Trading a life-debt for a half-life is exactly how Jack would see it. That paragraph was, really, beautifully tragic, and your ability to crawl inside Jack's mind is truely astounding. Honestly, the entire drabble moved me deeply.

Might I point out that you're extremely talented at reading between the lines? *wink*

Thank you so much for your comments! You are very kind.

your ability to crawl inside Jack's mind

Hee. He's taken up permanent residence inside MY head, so it's only fair I return the favor on occasion. I'm glad you thought it was true to character.

*grins* Why, thank you!
