This is a little late arriving since I was among the increasing number of people that had to work this holiday. (Hey, it's still the 4th in California!) There are a lot of holidays that don't seem terribly important, and I can't say I mind the passing of their observance. That was a really informative entry.

Being English I have little concern with the 4th of July but I know that it's a pretty important holiday in the US (excuse me if I sound a little naive ;)). Most British people I know don't know a jot about it, other than the typical sort of "Ah, that's when we were kicked out of America". If I'm honest I think (on the whole) we're still sort of sore about that.

There are lots of holidays that have lost their true meaning, how many people can you really say go to church at Easter? But I guess the 4th of July is different because it's not part of a religion, it's part of a country's history... Hmm...

Sorry, I don't really know where this was going. :D Oh well, you can be happy that you got me thinking about it at least. Sorry for the randomly pointless comment xD
