Lately I've been sadly turned off to the BTVS/ATS some because of many things, one of which being how off the comics feel in certain places. While other comics aren't always consistent with how the characters are written this hasn't turned me off as fast as the BTVS/ATS ones.

Do you still like the character/story even if the character isn't acting like themselves? )

Comics can be frustrating. Higly enjoyable but frustrating. especially when the writer does not see the characters the way that you do. Or they have their own agenda that they would rather service than the story or the character. (tv can be like that to but at least as you pointed out a good actor can give depth to dialogue.)
I sometimes think that Wes/Fred is the ship that Joss could not let go of. I have never understood the suddeness of Wesley/Fred season five. In the shooting script of HITW Fred tells Wesley that she does not love him. (i wish they had left that in.) I think the scenes in the comic maybe Wesley's dream of heaven.
As for Spike, I am hoping that all will be explained in Spike ATF.
I still can't bring myself to read the BTVS comic. The more i hear about it the less i want to read it. I keep waiting for Joss to let them (his core four not Dawn cause i hear she is still gigantic) to grow up already.

B/A is pointless to return to, and unless Angel wants to one up a rival or Cordy isn't there he's never shown an interest in Buffy since his "gotta say I'm sorry even though she's the one who acted like an ass" after the Faith arc.
A lot of fans have thought that Wes slipped something into his spell but then again he seemed startled that she liked him in Smile Time. I think Joss lost what makes a good story and is trying to retrend old ground because he feels it's safer.
