Lately I've been sadly turned off to the BTVS/ATS some because of many things, one of which being how off the comics feel in certain places. While other comics aren't always consistent with how the characters are written this hasn't turned me off as fast as the BTVS/ATS ones.
While the comics aren't the only medium that has made the characters act unlike themselves (the shows are also very guilt of this) it seems a little more apparent when they don't sound like themselves and you can't have the actors attempt to cover this fact by using normal body language. One thing for example is Fred suddenly being attracted to Wesley in season 5 of Angel. This came out of no where after years of working together, her telling him in season 4 why Charles was more her type for NOT being as violent as Wes, and her dating Knox. It was never explained why she decided to date him, whether it was because of the mind wipe which made her not see that side of him anymore (possible given her reaction to Roger-robots' death) or if she thought he was pretty cute when he cast the spell in YW. In the previews of the next comic it looks like she's in heaven with him AND in love with him while on the show she never expressed caring for him that much. In fact when she "died" she didn't return his love she said she was sorry, maybe for not being able to feel the same before she died?
Spikes' peeking at Illyria/Fred while she bathed seems off too given his respect of the woman and his reaction to the Buffybot after Buffys' death. Someone suggested that he was watching to make sure she was okay but since we don't have the actor we must go by the lines. And they don't cast Spike in the best of lights.
Seeing scans of Buffy I can only mildly go "yay" at Dracula who is gushing way too much over Xander. Yeah he had a thing for his man servant in another comic but on the show he seemed to see him as an easy to replace moron, didn't he? Buffy seems to be bi (at least) despite Joss claiming it was just her trying something new. She comments on how hot she finds it when Satsu calls her ma'am. Everyone seems to regressed from season 7 into their teenage selves and I can't see why I should care about anyone.
I recently got into Captain America after Steve Rogers was killed and the title was passed to his former partner James "Bucky" Barnes. One of the things that irks me is when he isn't written in character. His younger self (in the days of WW2) is supposed to be a soldier that does the dirty work that Steve can't afford to do being an icon. He takes the job seriously but still has a fun side that tries to lighten the mood for Steve when he's all work or too serious (usually off the field.) Bucky is pretty mature for a 16-19 year old. Yet in other series like the Wolverine Origins he only is shown as a soldier that wants to get his missions done. He punches Logan for no other reason than not liking the man for wanting to take Steve up on his past offer for a partnership without knowing that has changed.
In the new Avengers/Invaders 12 part mini series he is written too immature at 18. While I could see him calling Namor "subby" because he knows it annoys him, and finding Toro flirting with an enemy during a battle funny other things felt really off. Like Bucky repeatedly referring to the Germans as Krauts, which I'm not certain if it's a slur or not. In the current Captain America run Bucky seems a bit baffled when a illusion of Cap says something along the lines of the only good kraut being a dead one. He also is honored to have worked with the Invaders, calling them heroes while in the first issue of the mini series he ogles a female member, calls another boring, and for some reason says that if he had powers he'd want them like Namors'. Which is odd given how in CA Bucky doesn't seem to care much that he doesn't have powers, and being able to fly is an interesting desire since his father died from falling a great height. As is his buddy Toro thinking he's a stud with the ladys' and hitting on one during a fight also is off given the shy, unsure young man he is presented as in flashbacks that take place when he's supposed to be a year older than he is written here.
I hate, with a passion, how Booster Gold is sometimes written like he's stupid simply because he tells jokes and has made mistakes in the past. In the current run he's more mature, wanting to be a hero for the right reasons not to make money, though he still wants glory/respect and still makes mistakes when his emotions are involved. I'm scared at how the next writer(s) might write him once Johns and Katz leave.
