Weather Woes...

The weather continues to be less than cooperative.  When I got back to the farm this evening, I saw that some of our shingles were flapping about up on the roof.  I can only hope that they'll stay in place long enough for us to be able to get up there and try to nail them down again.  That is to say, long enough for trixstir  to climb up on the roof ( Read more... )

Weather radios are very important equipment here. They're AM, so they have very good range, but there's at least three transmitters in range, here. Then again, we're at the south end of "tornado alley" and it's pretty routine for places around here to get blasted. Taylor is 15x the size of Shaunavon, and we don't have a transmitter here, but like I said, there's a half dozen larger cities within transmitter distance. Does Canada have something like NOAA? NOAA has excellent live radar on their website. Much more useful than a weather radio (though since our Internet is long-range 802.11, we have had a tower taken out by a tornado before, which cuts off our connection!)

Canada does indeed have a system very much like NOAA, and the weather-alert radios that are used State-side work here as well. Unfortunately, there isn't a US transmitter any closer, so that doesn't help either. Environment Canada has quite a few weather-radar stations, and this one covers the area that includes Shaunavon (We're not too far NW of Val Marie.)
