If memory serves, MOST Wet/Dry vacs tell you to NOT use the filter when doing wet pickup, or have a foam filter as opposed to the paper-style one.

Ours didn't specify. Which lead me to wonder.

I figure the best idea is to keep a clean one around just in case you need to switch from wet to dry.

You're quite right - the normal paper filter is to be removed when you're using the wet pick-up mode, and you use jut the foam filter. However, a few years ago, Shop-Vac came out with a new "cartridge-style" filter that's made of pleated material, backed by a metal mesh. This is a washable (rinseable) reusable filter that can be used for both wet and dry pick-up. Of course, you're supposed to clean the thing when you switch between modes, but that wasn't a luxury that I had time to deal with last night.

I picked up another foam filter at the agro-centre today. I was lucky - it was the last one that they had! Fortunately, the cooler weather has meant that the basement should stay dry for now - the warmer weather is due to return on Sunday, and I plan to have the snow cleared away by then.
