French Bread, and KITTENS!

      The French Bread that I was making today came out beautifully!  It actually rose a little too much, but otherwise it was perfect; the texture and flavour are exactly what I expected, and it's taking a lot of will-power to not scarf down the entire loaf!  ;)  What surprises me is that French Bread is actually a more simple recipe than typical ( Read more... )

Yeah, my father used to make fresh french bread at *least* once a week or so. It's good stuff, and dirt cheap to make yourself. If you've one o' them newfangled breadmakers, it's even easier..

Now you know why it's so good. Less sugar and no fat!
That's also why it doesn't keep: no fat.

I have seen several recipes for "French Bread" that add a little vegetable oil to help it keep, but IMO that's cheating, and it's no longer true French Bread. With three of us eating it though, it doesn't take long for a loaf to dissappear, so there's not much chance for it to go stale. ;)
