Two somewhat related (through my bad luck) stories:

People are just so busy going from place to place, that no one cares about a deer. They probably saw it and assumed what you did at first, it was just chilling at the side of the road.
But again, you had to do something, and you did. A story like that just never has a happy ending.
At least you did something about it, and the deer's no longer suffering.

and that poor raccoon, well... just consider it survival of the fittest. One day, the only ones left will be the ones that know how to look both ways ;)
