The general saying is 5-6 years, though I have heard some manufacturers suggest 3 instead. I currently own an Ovation Protégé, which fits great and has a reduced profile. They also come in colors and sometimes you can find them on sale for $40. My husband loves his Tipperary Sportage and I have a friend who does NATRC who lovea hers to pieces. Troxel recently released a low-profile helmet called the Intrepid and I believe there are a few other brands and modles and some of them pretty reasonably priced.

You can order online or through a catalog, but nothing really beats going in and seeing which one fits your noggin the best because different brands and modles are shaped differently.

Welcome back to riding!

You can always go in & try them on to find the best fit & then see if you can find it online cheaper :)

Though this is a big waste of the store employees time and the owner's money. The tack stores in my area are both struggling small businesses that have really suffered from people coming in and doing this. Spend the extra $2 and buy it from your tack store if you're using up their time.

Agreed, if the difference isn't much.
Tack shops near me are chains or top end... nothing struggling about them.

there should be a sticker inside with the manufacturing date. shelf life is five years after manufacture under best conditions, more like three years if exposed to typical temperature fluctuations, and over if you fall on it or drop it.

i like the tipperary sportage and some more expensive irh helmets myself, but you really need to try them on in person. really no one cares if you think you look ridiculous, but it matters if you get brain damage or not.

I definitely care more about my brain than how I look! I just wondered if there were less hideous options, lol. I got an ovation that doesn't loo terrible, so I'm happy! Thanks!

*grin* i'm glad you have your priorities on straight, and i'm delighted you got a helmet you like! that's me in one of my tipperaries (now post mortem) in the icon. i'm convinced i look dorky in it, but yeah, i'd rather look like a dork than a medical mishap. enjoy!

I second Tipperary. All (relatively affordable) helmets look like bowls on me except that one.

My troxel really did look like a planet cut in half. I got an ovation today, it doesn't look too bad! The irh helmets in the store looked nice too but were a bit more than I wanted to spend for schooling. Thanks!
