The general saying is 5-6 years, though I have heard some manufacturers suggest 3 instead. I currently own an Ovation Protégé, which fits great and has a reduced profile. They also come in colors and sometimes you can find them on sale for $40. My husband loves his Tipperary Sportage and I have a friend who does NATRC who lovea hers to pieces. Troxel recently released a low-profile helmet called the Intrepid and I believe there are a few other brands and modles and some of them pretty reasonably priced.
You can order online or through a catalog, but nothing really beats going in and seeing which one fits your noggin the best because different brands and modles are shaped differently.
Though this is a big waste of the store employees time and the owner's money. The tack stores in my area are both struggling small businesses that have really suffered from people coming in and doing this. Spend the extra $2 and buy it from your tack store if you're using up their time.
I managed to get out my sort-of-local tack shop today after spending only $160 ish. I would love to buy most everything in there! I b a lot online but some things just need to be tried on, and I'm always glad to support local.

Welcome back to riding!
