Waterproof Saddle Cover for Riding + Half Pad Praise

Dec 28, 2010 00:35

Hi guys, it's been quite a while since I posted here! I live in good ol Washington State and it's been raining quite a bit here, as usual, but I've been really itching to ride, which got me wondering, does anyone know of a good, but CHEAP waterproof saddle cover that you can ride in? Has anyone ever tried one? Was it successful at keeping your ( Read more... )

I've never personally ridden in a saddle cover like that. I worry though that if the plastic or rubber of those ones gets slick and you'd have a dicey moment (eg. a spook that throws you off balance, etc) you may not be able to regain your balance easily. I know you don't want to spend much but have you looked at these?

Go here: http://www.couponcabin.com/coupons/horse/ and click on the first link that says save $5 off your order and it'll take you to the horse.com website. Search for quarter sheet, find the one above and the $5 off drops the price to 19.99 with free shipping. I'd think this would be a better option to keep your seat dry and your pants but then again, aside from shows, I've never ridden in the rain! Good luck!

Yeah, I've looked at a couple of those, but they don't cover my saddle. The ones I've seen that come up over the rider's legs and cover the saddle are only fleece, not waterproof.

I've thought about how a cover might get slick, but honestly I don't have any waterproof riding gear, so I don't think I would ride in rain heavy enough to make it slick. I just want to avoid getting water spots on my saddle so I don't have to worry about rain as much as I do now.

I guess I just assumed you could use a quarter sheet like the one posted as a quarter sheet that covers the rider as well. If you're not looking to cover the horse's rump, I think it'd be plenty big enough to cover you and the saddle. Then again, I've never used them. Just a thought.

I think it has special loops for the girth so it will stay on while riding, and the ones that cover the rider have some kind of velcro closure, I think maybe it goes around the riders leg? I have no idea, because I've never ever used a quarter sheet. But I don't think there's any way to keep it on the horse if you tried to pull a normal quarter sheet over your legs.

I did find a waterproof one that goes over your legs on Equestrian Collections, but they're sold out of the size I'd need.

Yeah, I never used to have an issue with riding in the rain in my old saddle, but my newer saddle is a bit lighter, and it seems to leave lasting spots from rain drops.

Thanks for the info about Chick's. I'm just a little suspicious of discount sites like that, so good to know that they seem OK. Didn't realize they did expos and stuff like that.

Cool, thanks! :) Wish we had stuff like that where I lived, but I don't think there are any major tack stores in my area, except for Stateline Tack in Petco. I think the closest expos are in California.

I have the Cashel one for my large dressage saddle and it DOES work quite well. Also, contrary to what others are saying it does not get slick when wet. It's actually more grippy than my saddle normally is.

Looks like it would work fine if you have a smaller saddle - that wouldn't fit mine!

Hmmm, I wish it had more information on sizing and whatnot. My saddle is a 17.5" close contact, think it would fit?
