Soreness question

Dec 03, 2009 19:42

So Gali has been on and off sore for about a week and a half now. It's more on than off, but very subtle. To myself and my trainer it looks like it's muscular in his upper right shoulder/elbow area, near the point of the shoulder. I'm not really sure what the next step is going to be for us. I've buted him a few times and he looks better after ( Read more... )

If it were me, I'd give him a week off with light turnout (or handwalking if he's going to be a nutter in the pasture), and call the vet if he's not improved by the end of the week.

He IS a big player in the field and stall rest is impossible for him (he tears the walls down if he thinks he's alone), but I think the week off is a good idea.

Yeah....I had a horse on 3 months of stall rest followed by 3 months of handwalking. A big, stupid, half-crazed TB who loses his MIND pacing if he is alone. That was fun. Eventually I started turning him out in a round pen IN the pasture so he felt like he was with his girlfriends while not actually being able to go anywhere. Fortunately they were both pretty mellow girls, so it worked out fine.

If he ever *has* to go on stall rest, I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to get him a pony.

He rears and bucks in his stall, along with all the pacing and screaming and panicking that goes along with his whole "I'm alone! Gonna get eaten!" thing. :/

Agree with first comment - some time off and if it doesn't seem to be getting better, call the vet.

Is there a smaller paddock to put him in so he won't play as much, or the only options are either stall or field?

Hope it's nothing major and he gets better soon. :) I'm going through the same thing right now with one of the horses I ride. We can't figure out what's wrong with her, but we're giving her time off and hope it goes away before having to call the vet.

Eh he'd drag the roundpen around with him. Luckily he is on individual turnout so he shouldn't play TOO much.

i'd just add to check his opposite hip, even if he's not short there he could still be having some issues that he has compensated for in the front and made himself sore.

goodluck!!
(im in the same boat, got a pony with a few tight vertebrae, granted that wouldnt be horrible if he didnt have such a short back!!) gotta love all their drama!! ;)

does your chiropractor do any massage therapy, or is it just about adjusting the spine?

Could be muscle soreness or a slight pull, since you said he plays hard in the field. He may have slipped or stepped wrong or something. I would give him 3 or 4 days off and then come back slowly, see how he is. If it's still there, have a vet out to see, and if he seems better, you might have to scale back the work just a tad. It doesn't sound like anything major, which is good. I'd definitely start with a few days off and then go from there:)
