First look at the Kickstarter Brony documentary

Jan 22, 2013 05:48

The people behind this thing got John DeLancie to sing their opening number (and the fan-animation is AMAZING!!). And they also managed to get a cool surprise guest singer.

Video under the cut.... )

I thought that Tara Strong's cameo was a bit of a "payback" for the initial focus on dudes and how amazingly awesome they think they are for loving the show (as opposed to the female fans who are expected to eat it up). The initial smugness and self-importance makes sense when you consider who the "professor" is. But to each their own, I guess.

And I don't see how pointing out that the former gens weren't perfect equals "shitting on them". I dare you to find one person over 6-years-old who could sit through a Gen 3 MLP program and genuinely say they enjoyed the story (and NOT in a MST3K kind of way).

If someone over six can't sit through a G3 cartoon that's too bad, I'm someone who firmly believes a good children's cartoon should appeal to pretty much everyone, but that doesn't mean it's 'awful and tragic,' it simply did what it was supposed to (appeal to young children) in the most basic way possible.

And Generation 3 does have its adult fans.

I have sat through several Gen 3 MLP programs, and I liked them. So do many other people (how do you think Minty gained such a following?).

Yay, it's everything I knew it would be! Self congratulatory, self important, dismissive and pandering! Oh, joy!

Care to be more specific?

I think it goes without saying that the opening number would be upbeat and positive. What would you have them do? Would you prefer that the show writers make Tara Strong and John DeLancie sing an apologetic dirge about cloppers, abelism, and the Yamino incident? Seriously, I really want to know.

I would prefer an entirely different focus for the documentary. A celebration of ponies and fandom as a whole rather than bronies. Male fans of 'girly' shows aren't as unique as some people seem to think, and deciding to focus on one aspect of a gender going against expectations while ignoring some of the more problematic aspects of males dominating the discussion (and a previously 'female' space) seems disingenuous. The entire thing just seems so self indulgent.

The song is perfectly fine for what it's 'supposed' to be and do, telling bronies how awesome their fandom is and how wonderfully creative they are, but it's eye roll inducing for those of us who view 'My Little Pony' as just another fandom, and not some cultural phenomenon deserving of great praise and little criticism, but I get it, the documentary is not for me, I don't need to be told how special I am for liking things.

I thought it was awesome. I grew up with Gen 1 and knew it pandered to girls (much like TF was for boys) but both shows had fans of both sexes. I knew a boy who played Ponies with my sister and I, and I loved me some alien robots battling it out. I don't think the song is meant to insult fans at all. To each their own I suppose.

I saw this on Lauren's DA just yesterday (I was wondering about her!), and I'm about ready to snag the video because of how much she's promoting it.

I loved the documentary, and while I don't feel it would be enough to sway the likes of my husband or other extroverted overly masculine types, it would probably prove valuable to people who are curious as to why men like the series. Besides the the brony marines and the rave scenes, I'm not sure there would be enough for my husband to relate to to be able to sit through it all however ( ... )

Well, Hipsterism is basically the mainstreaming of Beatnik culture and Goodwill fashion-shopping. Unlike actual hippies, whom everyone still seems to hate even though hippies actually are some of the best people I've ever known.
