The people behind this thing got John DeLancie to sing their opening number (and the fan-animation is AMAZING!!). And they also managed to get a cool surprise guest singer.
I thought that Tara Strong's cameo was a bit of a "payback" for the initial focus on dudes and how amazingly awesome they think they are for loving the show (as opposed to the female fans who are expected to eat it up). The initial smugness and self-importance makes sense when you consider who the "professor" is. But to each their own, I guess.
And I don't see how pointing out that the former gens weren't perfect equals "shitting on them". I dare you to find one person over 6-years-old who could sit through a Gen 3 MLP program and genuinely say they enjoyed the story (and NOT in a MST3K kind of way).
If someone over six can't sit through a G3 cartoon that's too bad, I'm someone who firmly believes a good children's cartoon should appeal to pretty much everyone, but that doesn't mean it's 'awful and tragic,' it simply did what it was supposed to (appeal to young children) in the most basic way possible.
You speak for yourself when you say the previous gens were just crap. I like them, and G4 wouldn't exist if other people didn't, too
Gen 3 & 3.5 WAS crap. Really, there's no way around it. It was pandering to the point of being outright insulting to little girls and the animation was garbage.
If you can see past that and enjoy it, well, more power to ya. But I just can't see the appeal. I mean....all they do is prance around fretting about what color scarf to wear to the daily tea party (and it isn't even the FUN kind of Tea Party!).
How the hell was G3 "crap"? Genuine question. G3.5 I can understand, given the direction Hasbro took the line, and later G3 when they adopted the 'core seven' stupidity was awful, but I absolutely do not understand when people say the G3 line was 'crap'.
It featured redesigned ponies that closely resembled the original (extremely popular, one of the most popular toylines in history, in fact) G1 ponies, and had actually themed 'sets' of ponies that appealed to the collector market, such as Birthflower, Jewel, scented (a very popular toy idea with children) and sparkly, glittery ponies (y'know, the same type that G4 fans were clammering over the prospect of getting with Crystal Empire.) We even got themed seasonal sets, such as Christmas and Halloween, which is more than the G4 line seems to be getting.
The line lasted years and was extremely popular with children and collectors until Hasbro in their infinite wisdom decided that ponies aren't horses, but in fact 'little girls' and re-branded the line to suit a new moronic mentality
( ... )
The cartoon is another story, but you didn't say the *cartoons* were crap, you said the whole G3/G3.5 line was crap.
I'm pretty sure just about everyone is specifically referring to the cartoons and not the toys (since the video everyone is talking about only references other MLP TV shows and never talks about the merchandise). Not every MLP fan is a toy collector with intimate knowledge of the toyline, y'know.
Maybe the G3 & G3.5 toys were awesome (I wouldn't know since I stopped buying Ponies when I was a kid). But the cartoons attached to them were not.
I understood through context that you were talking about the cartoons, not the toys. ^_^ Quite a few people here are collectors and they seem to take poorly to any perceived slight to the old toys. And to state the obvious, that is my opinion.
Urgh.

And Generation 3 does have its adult fans.

I have sat through several Gen 3 MLP programs, and I liked them. So do many other people (how do you think Minty gained such a following?).

"There's no way around it" isn't a citable fact, sorry.
It's actually ... what's the word for this?
I'm really struggling to remember it, what was ... oh! I remember!
Your opinion.
