i should be asleep, but instead, i am now wondering (thanks mostly to ciudad) about the working dynamics of the cobb/mal/arthur pre-movie relationship. because clearly there was a little something something going on (shut up, it is clear. in my head, anyway) and i mean, it would be awesome to read about how arthur got involved (again, i am looking at ciudad :D

I KNOW RIGHT. THIS IS MY BIGEST PROBLEM WITH BUYIN INTO THE MAL/COBB, THAT THEY GLOSSED OVER THE 50 YEARS THEY SPENT TOGETHER - WITH NO ONE ELSE - LIKE IT WAS A PARTY. i don't buy that for a SECOND, so i figure it must be denial. (AND OH. MY GOD. THIS SO HARD ABOUT THE KIDS, JESUS. in my head, arthur takes over loving the kids when she can't anymore, and--ugh. ugh it kills me, how he's just willing to do, like, ANYTHING AS NECESSARY. oh arthur. I LOVE YOUR WHOLE ANALYSIS, IS WHAT I'M SAYING, AND ITA WITH EVERYTHING. mal is lovely only because dom sees it that way. in ace's words, dom thinks she hung the moon. AND IT IS JUST FRUSTRATING WHEN THERE IS SO MUCH ABOUT HER THAT CLEARLY DOESN'T DESERVE THAT ADORATION.

Okay, I think I like/am fascinated with Mal because, IMO, Nolan actually makes her out to be a total psychotic bitch! Dom might say he adored her and that they had the perfect life, but his subconscious image of her gives the lie to that. She is a repository of all his negative emotions, guilt and regret: he says he loved her perfectly, but he hates her too (her shade is so angry and full of hate!). And of course he has reason to hate her - she refused to leave limbo, she hatched that crazy psychotic bitch plan to keep him from their children, she refused to believe him and killed herself, and kept her away from their children.

The question is: Did she go crazy because of limbo or because he made her so via the inception - or was she crazy from the beginning? (Dom certainly thinks the former, Nolan - I'd suggest - telegraphs the latter; and in the end, Dom decisively frees himself of her and his love and guilt as well, so that it doesn't matter.)

Also, even if she was crazy from the beginning, as ciudad mentions, that kind of screwed up

oh man, okay, idk, i feel like they started with fascination/adoration, like the punch-drunk feeling during the first few months/years/however-long-it-takes-for-the-honeymoon-glow-to-wear-off, and i do think mal was, if not completely normal, then at least under control while they were together in reality. it's not like we're given reason to believe she was a terrible mother, but i think what really drew cobb to her was the fact that they both loved to build

there's enough wiggle room with what we're given to assume that you can create people as well as buildings in limbo - yesyes, I meant, did Dom and Mal create images of their kids when they were down there, consciously or unconsciously (as opposed to being down there for 50 years creating willy nilly and with nary a thought of the little ones)? When Cobb and Ari land in limbo in the movie, they see the image of the kids - was it created from that former time, or did Cobb bring that image with him and Ari? (I think I need to watch the movie again!)

I hear you about the 50 years in limbo part - though I'd imagine time passes strangely there, and you wouldn't experience the passage of time in the same way. And I agree - and the breakdown of that marriage is, actually, part of the canon. If you have a marriage where one party is so obsessed with the other and mired in a way of life that she doesn't want to leave, and the other becomes so desperate that he decides to invade her mind (in order to save her) and make her, it's hardly a happy/

they must have created images of their children while they were down there, i think. i'm not sure why i assume this, but i do. i just assume, i guess, from the memory in dom's subconscious of mal and the kids at the beach. i think she's wearing the same dress as the one she wore while she was building sandcastles with him after they washed up on limbo.

idk about the passage of time in limbo, though. i assumed you'd feel it pass the same way, only it's a lot longer than what's going on in the real world? i have no idea. but yes, anyone who decides that the best way to solve a problem is to perform inception on his own spouse instead of having an open dialogue cannot have the healthiest relationship with said spouse. SO.

and also i don't think tom hardy could ever NOT make me giggle. plus he's adorable! and he says he has low self-esteem! idek, he makes me want to pet him and feed him soup.

...and then possibly slink around in his lap for a little fun. ahem.
