What does one do when they've read a story and realize that it is incredibly similar to a story they've just written and it just so happens, that the similar sounding story was posted before

I remember reading at least two other fics with the idea of "dreaming" and they were entirely different from yours and it didn't make me enjoy it any less ♥

it's not too huge of a favour, I'm surprised I haven't read it before XD my boss may come any time so I'm not sure if I can read the whole now, but I have read enough to honestly say you're freaking out for no reason. it's differnt and I would have never associated it with Dreaming of you. STOP FREAKING OUT FOR GOD'S SAKE!

I personaly think this can happen from time to time because there's basically not a story that hasn't been told before. I think so too and whenever I write something I always have in the back of my mind, what if this story has been told before. I try and be as original as I can, but since I'm pretty new to the fandom, I really don't know what else has been written out there.
I think taking the story down would be a passive admittence of guilt, which I feel horrible, but it's not because I feel guilty. How could I copy I story I didn't read until after I posted it.
I think my basis for freaking out is because this happened to me in another fandom. I got this email from an angry reader, telling me I plagiarized a story when 1. I didn't even read the story. 2. It was a completely different fandom, one I didn't even like. I was completely blow away and it was very disheartening to be accused of something I 1. Didn't do and 2. Would never do.
I think I probably will write the author and let her/him know about my concerns.
I think if you think to much of this "what if this story has been told before" you are not able to write because there is always the possibility that there has someone written something similar... even if it is in another fandom. But I understand you. I think I would be freaking out too. *hugs*
What I can understand is that people are angry when their story is copied. Which happens very often, unfortunetly. What I can't understand is people writing angry comments without asking if there is the possibility that the author didn't knew there is a similar story. (Of cours if someone has written word-for-word the same it's another case) Well, basically I don't understand how someone can write an angry comment without even trying to see it as an missunderstanding in the first place. *hugsyoumore*

Do not take it down, I'm quite certain you have your own twist to your story. In popslash, there are a ton of "similar" themes but they ALL have their own twist and style. It totally happens...there is only so many stories to tell.
I was just freaking out because I literally just posted it this weekend and then bam I read this story and it was like wtf. I was just really surprised at the parts I personally felt where a little to similar, like "how did you get into my brain like that" lol
I know it does happen, I'm still somewhat bothered but I'm going to keep the story up anyway.

It was different overall,, it just had the same theme, the same beginning.. And don't worry, having the same story doesn't mean you're a copycat, right?
