Musical Sunday!

Well, it's the 4th of July, so there's really only one show I could feature today - 1776. My American History teacher in high school showed us the movie in class, but fast-forwarded through all the parts with Abigail Adams and Martha Jefferson (because women are a waste of time, you know). Apparently, it wasn't "relevant" - because the rest of the ( Read more... )

Awesome musical, though I don't like the movie version (not sure why I just felt it was lacking something. May be the stage version is just more interactive? Especially since I saw a small community production). And it's a shame your teacher let out Martha Jefferson and Abigail Adams' songs, especially as I felt that Abagail's showed how woman contributed to the war effort a little and Martha's song is just fun (I LOVE singing it). Heck, hers with Lee's song are my favorites from the show. Going to dig up some 1776 clips now.

Happy 4th! Hope you do something fun!

Yeah, I tend to find movie versions are always lacking something. A movie just doesn't have the energy of a live performance. On the other hand, they provide accessibility to musicals for people who couldn't see them otherwise, so it's better than nothing.

Happy 4th to you, too!

I read the authors' commentary on the original play once, and apparently they sorta mushed Samuel Adams (who was obnoxious and disliked) together with John for dramatic purposes.

(And fast-forwarding through Abigail?!? WTF?!?!?!)

Yeah, I'd read that, too. I also believe they made him more of an underdog than he really was - apparently, voting for independence was the popular position, but it makes a better story if they really have to work for it. :)

OMG I love this movie, but I've never seen it live.

I've never had a teacher show this in class, but I took a class called history goes to the movies in highschool and our final project was to pick a movie that we didn't cover in class and do this whole oral report on it and show a clip and all that jazz, and almost everyone in the class did war movies or super serious movies like Malcom X or the Grapes of Wrath, and I did 1776.... it was hilarious... everyone was like dude Mr. Feeny sings?!?1
