A new voice, calling, with a vague familiarity to the sound. Ed gripped his skull. The hunger headache had become a pounding and he wanted to throw up. Fear made him queasy. The fear that he'd never come upon a familiar face ever again ( ... )

Oh. Right. The group, Edward's old military buddies, had enjoyed teasing him with bits of liquor now and then (which he remembered suddenly that he'd always disliked the taste of), but he hadn't started REALLY drinking until he'd gotten to Munich. Seemed like the place just made you hanker for a drink.

Which reminded him...

He started to pat down his pockets, looking for something. Not there. Goddamnit. He sighed harshly, then turned his attention back to Al.

"Yeah...a little. It's kind of the norm there, I guess. You can have a little, if you want."

"Oh," Alphonse said, thoughtfully. It wasn't that uncommon in Central, either, if you frequented the right streets on the weekend evenings. Especially after the soldiers' pay was doled out. Then, amiably, "I suppose."

There was cause for celebration, after all.

He looked down the hallway in the direction opposite the way he'd come. "Do you want to keep trying doors until we find something?"

Ed frowned deeply. There had to be more to this place than freaking HALLWAYS.

"...we could just...use a little alchemy..." His eyes glittered strangely as he rubbed his hands together, as if to make the magic work better.

Yeah. And blow through all the walls until they found a kitchen or liquor or something.

So that was what Alphonse had smelled -- he'd thought it was alchemy.

He had spent years cultivating the precise portions of irritation, exasperation, and pointed silence to deal with his brother's antics -- but the effect had been largely lost when he'd not been in possession of a face.

He tried it now, for the first time, giving Ed a flat look. "Do you honestly think that's a good idea?"
