Meanwhile, aboard the Enterprise... (Open for communications from the planet)It was quiet on the bridge now, although the few crew still manning it were no less tense than before. In the absence of communications from either of the away teams they had no way of knowing what the situation was on the planet ( Read more... )

The silence on the bridge was interrupted by an much anticipated beep from the communications console on the command chair. The message was faint and incomplete: "Enter.... me... prise? .... please..."

Back on the planet, Leonard looked over again to Spock. "I don't think they got the message. Can ya try boostin' the signal, or a different frequency?" The Vulcan nodded and finessed the equipment. He watched and waited until black eyes suggested he try it now. Taking a hopeful breath, Leonard spoke into the communicator again. "Enterprise, this is McCoy. Do you read me? Away team to Enterprise."

The tension on the bridge snapped like a rubber band and everyone seemed to sag a little with relief. Hard pressed not to grin like an idiot, Scotty pressed the bridge comm; "This is Enterprise. What's your situation down there?"

Was that... Scott? Sure the hell sounded like it. Leonard was initially surprised, until he remember that the other man was next in line to Spock. Following on that thought, he remembered back two nights ago to the hissy fit they'd had in Sickbay. It hadn't occurred to him at the time that technically he was mouthing off to his superior officer. He was so sick with relief, though, he almost laughed now. Hell, if he could he'd have reached through the communicator and kissed the man.

"Oh thank god! Our situation's not good. We've been abducted by some rebel cell an' we're being held in a bunker somewhere. What's worse, these people know how to control that pollen we were meant to study. They're gonna release it, Scotty. You've got to get us the hell outta here before then." Belatedly, a thought occurred to him. "Where's J-- the Captain? Is he planet-side?"

"Aye, the captain took a second team down," Scotty replied, "We've not heard from them yet - not sure what their situation is. You'll have to take the shuttle back up. We're having...issues...with the transporters." Which was exactly why he shouldn't be in bloody command! He should be down in the transporter room fixing the damn problem. Surely there was someone else who could have taken the conn?
