Meanwhile, aboard the Enterprise... (Open for communications from the planet)
It was quiet on the bridge now, although the few crew still manning it were no less tense than before. In the absence of communications from either of the away teams they had no way of knowing what the situation was on the planet.
What grated most of all was knowing that there was nothing they could do to help those crewmembers on the planet. They had no way of getting backup down in a hurry, or snatching them away from harm - Scotty was finding it hard not to consider the transporter failure a personal insult.
As it was, there was nothing to do but wait.
