Sulu was finally getting some downtime. Alpha shift was over and they'd finally be relieved by the beta shift. He was free for a few hours to do whatever he liked

Leonard came strolling in to Mess not so much for food as for caffeine. Damn if he wasn't having another difficult time adjusting to space life. He was just too tied to the Earth, to his roots.
A damn inconvenience, as the ex owned that now.
They hadn't been on Earth all that long before official assignment. Still, that hadn't stopped him from reverting back to what he thought of as his natural state. What should be the natural state of any Human. If they were meant for Space, Space would be flowers and picnics wrapped in sunshine and music. Obviously, everyone else was deluding themselves.
Fuck, he was getting cranky.
As much as he hated it, he ordered some fruit -- not that he hated fruit, he was a doctor, damnit, but replication was far from perfect -- and grabbed a mug full of his prize. Leonard wasn't certain of the wisdom of exposing others to his fowl mood. His eye, however, landed on Sulu and recognition clicked. The man smiled at him and something in Leonard's head just said, "Yeah, why not

The moment McCoy stalked over, Sulu thought this was probably a bad idea. The man looked like he had just had the worst day in the history of ever which, considering what had happened on Vulcan, was kind of difficult.
He shifted a little and offered McCoy as friendly a smile as he could muster. "It's quiet out there, sir," he answered. "Nothing really to report."
Pavel had lingered on the bridge for a time after the shift had been dismissed. It wasn't that he distrusted the Beta shift navigator or anything like it, he simply enjoyed seeing how other ensigns went about the job. There was always the chance of learning something new, even if the other ensign has seemed less than pleased to have the 'kid' watching him. As pleasant as he had attempted to be, it had only taken one snapped comment about Chekov not trusting the grown ups to handle the controls to chase him away from the bridge with a stuttered apology and down to the mess hall.
He perked up as he entered, spotting Sulu, only to pause for a moment as an obviously displeased doctor McCoy stalked over to the table. Had Sulu done something to get in trouble? Pavel retrieved his small dinner from the replicator, hesitating to join his shift mate in case there was something wrong. He tilted his head, trying to ask permission to approach from Sulu with raised eyebrows and a quick hand gesture before attempting to head over.
If there was one thing Leonard was proud of, it was his powers of perception. Well, of others. Sulu seemed polite enough, the times they'd interacted, but the doctor could sense the other man was a bit on edge. Damn, was his mood that obvious? To put the man at ease, Leonard forced himself to relax his face into something of a smirk. It kinda hurt.
"Sometimes that's the best kind of report. And just call me 'doctor'. 'Sir' makes me wanna call you 'son'." And Leonard wasn't that old yet to be doing such a thing.
Perception being what it was, a feeling came over him to look behind. He saw the Other Kid -- Chekov -- looking in their direction with an expression like he'd forgotten his hall pass. It made Leonard wonder if he was in the way of something. Well, his theory about his sociability had been proved correct. Perhaps he should go find himself a corner to menace from.
"Looks like you've got company," he turned back to Sulu. This time he actually managed the smirk. "I'll leave you to it. Enjoy the quiet."
"No, sir - um. Doctor," Sulu said quickly, shaking his head. "Please," he added. "Sit down."
Then he let his gaze slide behind McCoy to wave Chekov over as well. It was always nice to have more than one person for company, after all. And despite Chekov's age, he was impressed with the navigator's mind, and he was starting to enjoy is company a lot.
He also knew he should get to know the doctor better. That he really wasn't likely to bite his head off or anything.
Kirk had finished up on shift a little later than most, making certain that the helmsman could watch the conn and going over a few various points where they would have to be a little more careful than usual. They were traveling through a mostly unfamiliar part of space at the moment, and Starfleet had issued that they be on their toes.
You never would have guessed it by Kirk's demeanor however, carefree and relaxed, walking with his usual swagger as he made his way to the Mess to get something a bit more filling than the coffee had been before his shift. Spying everyone standing around, Kirk gravitated towards the people who had saved his life, admittedly glad that his crew had remained on the Enterprise with him. Grinning at Bones' usual bristled appearance, Kirk draped an arm around him and patted him on the shoulder, turning his attention on Sulu smiling back over at Chekov who was currently making his way towards the table.
"You're not demoting Lieutenant Sulu already, I hope," He teased lazily, and withdrew his arm, taking a
Lieutenant? Well shit, no wonder the man was on edge. Leonard refused to blush at the slip. He wasn't standard-issue military, after all. He'd been a doctor before Starfleet. He was now just a doctor with a fuller head. That was excuse enough.
Of course it was.
"Course not. Just testing you, is all." He may not be blushing... much, but he wasn't above a gentle bump of his arm against Jim's side. Something eased in him, despite all the foolishness, so he nodded to Sulu and plunked himself down at the table.
"Well, sit yourselves down already," he threw back at both Kids.
"Captain, Doctor, Lieutenant." He managed, making sure to greet each officers before he set his food down and slipped into the seat next to Sulu.
Pavel was still a bit off balance about how casual the Captain seemed to treat his subordinates, but that did nothing to stop the grin that formed at the Captain's teasing of the doctor.

Not surrounding by higher ranking officers made things a little easier. "Are you going to join us, Captain?"
