So about two weeks ago I read Ring (yes, as in the novel that inspired the Ring films in Japan and the USA). I really enjoyed it - it was very interesting and I enjoyed thinking of how it was translated into English (and kept having to remind myself to flip around the driving side rules when imagining). I liked the protagonist, though I really ( Read more... )

I read the Ring series for my Japanese Horror class, and ended up writing my final paper on the books-totally agree with what you said about first vs. second book.

I would love a class like that! I took "monsters in literature" (although actually it was monsters in film ;) ) in my last year of undergrad and loved it.

What are some other things you looked at during that class? (Also... does the 3rd Ring book pick up/get better after the first couple chapters? I'm irked at the moment.)

It was an amazing class! We looked at literature and film. It was almost five years ago so sadly I don't remember exactly as much as I'd like, but we looked at the different archetypes in Japanese horror, did some comparison to American horror, looked at the evolution of horror in Japanese literature...we did a lot of looking at ghosts and spirits as prevalent images as well.

From what I remember, the first book is by far the best, and the third gets pretty weird.

Ok that's the impression I'm getting of the third book so far. :p Guess I should have maybe gone to the short stories collection as my next read.

Do you remember reading Parasite Eve, by chance? I got interrupted about midway through my read of it so I'll need to go back and start over, but it was pretty interesting - I'd love to watch the movie again, too. I forget the author's name, but when I'd looked him up there were some other books of his I thought looked interesting but apparently haven't been translated. :-\
