And 24 hours later I officially give up...

I give up on trying to make TS3 hair retextures. The only tutorials I can find are for retexturing game hair and not custom hair, which is not accessed the same way that gae hair is so it's not like TS2 where 1 tutorial covers all types of hair retexturing. Every time I try to open a custom hair file using either CTU or TSR Workshop they cack ( Read more... )

Ugh, I feel your pain. It was much easier to create for Sims 2 because they actually made it possible to have custom content. With Sims 3, you have to do so much more, to a ridiculous extent. :/ I've been looking for a good Sims 3 retexturing tutorial for ages, but...either the process is too complicated to document or people just don't wish to share their secrets. Either way, good luck with the final method. D:

Don't give up, you'll see it's easier than it looks! I'm with my schedule a bit tight but I'm already working on finishing the tutorial to send it your way.

You can get s3pe to work/open without issues?

Also, you can preview the img files in s3pe without opening every one, go to Settings> Enable DDS preview. You'll see the imgs at the right side everytime you click some IMG file (you may have to uncheck the alpha box). http://i.imgur.com/wRKnt.png
You'll have to get three files, the difuse (grey), specular (darker version of the diffuse) and the control (the one with the color channels).

Thanks :)

Last night I managed to retexture your Sakura Drops without major problems using Workshop. Then I tried to open the streaked version and got errors again. I think that I need to stick to s3pe because so far I have not had any problems with it not wanting to open files.

I think I'm starting to get the hang of how things work in Sims 3 retexturing and what the different parts of the file do, but getting ALL the files to work is still eluding me. Thank you so much for all your help so far. That tip about enabling DDS preview is VERY helpful because I did not realise that I could do that. It will really cut down on the search time for the lines that contain textures.

Once you get how it works, you'll see that retexturing for sims 3 is faster than for sims 2, you'll spend the same amount of time doing the texture part but you'll save a lot of time because you won't have to recolor/ apply the color actions one by one. You edit only the control file and you get to have the hair in any colour you want.
I hope the tutorial isn't so confusing and I hope to be able to finish it/ add the images today :)
Also, when retexturing peggy's hairs, you'll see that her files are usually named very similar. The end of control file has the letter A, the diffuse and specular are 5 and 7. Saves you time even when looking at the previews. The number changes for other ages (3 and 4 normally, but that's about it).
