you're not pretentious..
you want your newbies to have the best time possible.
Good costume helps this, as it makes the rp more immersive.
If you are mentally going 'Nargh.. this costume sucks', you won't have quite as good a time as if you are going 'This costume feels so right for this character. yay.' It's like my tricorn.. the hat makes the character.. just as the beak makes the rukh :)
And yes.. maelstrom is indeed an artform, as are all larps.
Larpers take pride in their costume as much as their character :)

Hats are good.
You can take it off to show respect, you can throw it up in the air to celebrate, you can use it as a fan when it's hot, it keeps your head drier when it's raining, it can be used to hide behind or underneath in case of emergencies, you can hide shiny things inside it, you can lend it to somebody else to try, you can give it an amusing name, you can claim it's the source of all your power. You can even roll out of somebody's tent, realise your hat fell off and then quickly reach inside to snatch it back. You can pretend it's razor sharp and throw it at people. You can stick a feather in it, a ribbon around it, hang beads from it, sew patches into it, dye it and dangle corks from the brim of it. A hat lets people know what you're like ("It's a tricorn! It must be some kind of pirate!" or, "Shit, that's a fez! Run before she gets it into her head to marry us!"), helps you pretend to be somebody else in a pinch and provides something for curious dryads to pay an ( ... )

I knew there had to be a reason, and here was me thinking it was lack of money, the fact that my new kit isn't finished due to my finishing everyone else's kit, the fact I haven't even thought about packing and did I mention the lack of money LOL.
Still want a hat though!

I was very entratained. Its much funnier than the dairy milk advert with the gorilla drumming.
Which is probably on youtube, but I'm at work again, so I'm not looking.
