Jae's Monthly Drabble Challenge #140

Oct 08, 2017 14:28

It's a week into October, and we have yet to see any frost. That's unusual for this part of the country. Today, the temperature is nearing 80 degrees F, also unusual for October.

This month's JMDC prompt is a list of Halloween-appropriate words: creature, freak, horror, terrified, witch. Use one, some, or all, and use the words in any way you wish. You may write/draw any fandom, pairing, threesome, gen fic, original fic, etc. Combine it with other prompts, if you like.

Please post your entry in your own journal (unlocked!) or a community of your choice, and leave me a link in the comments below. You have until October 31 at 10:00pm CST to submit an entry. At that time, I'll post links to the entries and draw a name from among the participants to receive a drabble from me.

Below is my entry for this month:

Summary: Harry meets Draco's mum.

Aunt Petunia had been reluctantly impressed at how her silver shined. When she asked Harry how he'd managed to get it done, and done so well, he made the mistake of quipping, "Magic."

Harry wasn't prepared for the reaction it would cause. Petunia shrank back as if terrified, while Uncle Vernon clouted him on the side of the head and dragged him to the cupboard under the stairs. Vernon threw Harry in and slammed the door shut before yelling, "Do not ever use that word in this house again, you little freak!"

Harry was left to sniffle and dash the tears from his eyes. He consoled himself by playing with the dragon that Draco had given him. When it became apparent that he wasn't going to get any dinner that evening, Harry nibbled on the biscuits that Draco had sent home with him. They didn't fill him up, but they took the edge off of his hunger.

When Harry was let out of his cupboard the following morning, he sullenly went about his chores and didn't speak to anyone. He didn't even make a sound when Dudley tripped him as he was walking by his cousin. After lunch, which for Harry was a stale piece of bread and a bruised banana, the Dursleys once more prepared to leave the house. Harry was looking forward to some freedom, but Vernon had other plans. He grabbed Harry's collar and muscled him into the cupboard, shutting the door and locking it.

Harry sighed and flung himself back on his thin blankets. He wished he still had some of the biscuits Draco had given him. Thinking of his friend reminded Harry that he'd been able to call Dobby before. He wondered if the little creature would come to him again.

Harry sat up and tried it. "Dobby!"

"You is needing something, Master Harry Potter, sir?"

Harry yelped at Dobby's sudden appearance. "You, you startled me," he squeaked.

"Dobby is most aggrieved, sir. Dobby will punish himself."

Harry watched in horror as the small elf began to bang its head against the door of the cupboard. "Stop it, Dobby, stop," Harry cried, tugging Dobby away from the door. "I'm not angry at you," he said. "I just wanted to know if I can go play with Draco again."

Dobby blew his nose on his soiled garment. "Of course, sir," he said. "It is my honor to serve the great Harry Potter."

Harry wanted to ask if Dobby was making fun of him, but he was afraid the elf would hurt himself all over again. Harry held his tongue. Dobby took his arm and snapped his fingers, and Harry found himself in Draco's spacious bedroom once more.

"Harry!" Draco exclaimed. He was sitting in the window seat, reading a book. "I was just feeling bored and wishing you could come play with me." Draco tossed the book to the side and collected his toy dragons from a carved chest.

"I didn't bring the red one back," Harry said, feeling glum.

"That's okay," said Draco. "I have lots." He sat on the floor and gestured for Harry to come join him. The two boys played with the dragons, laughing and having fun.

Harry wasn't aware the door had opened until he heard a woman's voice.

"Draco? Your father wishes to see you in his study, and hello, who is this?"

Harry hunched his shoulders under the calm regard of the beautiful blonde woman in the doorway.

"Hi, Mum," Draco chirped. "This is my friend, Harry."

"Harry?" The woman's voice and eyes grew sharp. She turned to look at Draco. "Run along now. Don't keep your father waiting. I'll entertain Harry until you get back."

"Yes, Mum," said Draco. He stood and brushed off the seat of his trousers before dashing from the room.

"I wasn't aware that Draco had company, Harry," said Draco's mum. "How did you get here?"

Harry cleared his throat. "Dobby brought me here, Mrs...I'm sorry," Harry whispered. "I reckon I never asked Draco what his last name is."

"It's Malfoy," she said. "You may call me Mrs Malfoy. Do your parents know you're here, Harry? I don't want them to worry." As she spoke, Mrs Malfoy sat down gracefully on a small chair.

"My parents died when I was a baby," Harry explained. "I live with my aunt and uncle."

"I'm sorry to hear that," said Mrs Malfoy. "But, won't they worry about where you are?"

Harry dropped his eyes and shook his head. "They think I'm a freak," he whispered.

"Why is that?" Mrs Malfoy asked him gently.

Harry shrugged both shoulders. "Sometimes, things happen around me," he replied. "Bad things, especially when I'm upset."

"Do you mean magic?"

Harry's eyes flew to Mrs Malfoy's face, but she appeared concerned and serious. "There's no such thing as magic," Harry muttered.

"Someone hasn't been telling you the truth, Harry Potter," said Mrs Malfoy. "That is your last name, is it not? Potter?"

Harry's lips parted in surprise. "Yes, but how did you know that?"

Mrs Malfoy smiled at him. "Because I'm a witch," she replied. "And you, Harry Potter, are a wizard."
