Summary: Harry joins Luna on one of her madcap adventures.

"Do you trust me, Harry?"

"Yeah, Luna, I do," Harry replied, and he meant it. There were very few people in Harry's acquaintance whom he trusted more than Luna Lovegood. She never had an ulterior motive, nor any hidden agendas. Luna was simply Luna.

"What did you say we're looking for?" asked Harry. Luna had invited him along on one of her mad escapades, and Harry was unable to resist delighting in her whimsy.

"We're searching for the burrow of a mooncalf," said Luna. "They only emerge on nights like this, with a full moon."

"I thought the full moon was a werewolf thing," Harry commented as they reached the edge of a wheat field.

"Werewolves don't dance, Harry."

Smiling at Luna's nonsensical statement, Harry couldn't resist teasing, "How do you know they don't dance?"

Luna paused and actually seemed to think it over. "I've never seen one dance," she said at last, lifting one shoulder in a shrug.

"Have you ever observed a mooncalf dancing?"

"Oh yes," Luna said, turning to favor Harry with a bright smile. "Their dances are quite intricate and lovely. We need to be quiet now, Harry. Mooncalves are very shy creatures."

Luna folded her legs with enviable grace and sat down among the wheat, smoothing out her skirt. Under the light of the moon, the purple and yellow stripes seemed to make the fabric glow. "Would you like a snack?" whispered Luna.

"Yeah," Harry answered quietly.

Luna rummaged in her bag. "Here, hold this," she murmured, pushing a rubber duck into Harry's hands.

Harry's eyebrows shot up. "Er, why did you bring a rubber duck along?"

"In case a werewolf shows up," Luna absently replied. She succeeded in locating a sack of biscuits in her bag, and she offered one to Harry.

He accepted it and took a bite before venturing, "What good will a rubber duck do us if a werewolf shows up?"

"We'll throw it and run in the opposite direction," said Luna. "Werewolves can't resist chasing after rubber ducks."

"I did not know that," Harry said. He found himself half-hoping a werewolf would appear, if only to determine if Luna spoke the truth. Harry brought the biscuit to his mouth, only to have Luna grab his arm and still his movement.

"Shh," she cautioned. "I see its eyes."

"Where?" Harry whispered.

Luna pointed with the rubber duck. "Over there, see? The mooncalf's eyes are the first thing that emerges from its burrow. It will scan the area to make sure it's safe to come out."

Harry looked hard in the direction Luna indicated, catching his breath when he spotted movement.

Eventually, a head popped out of the ground, followed by the rest of the mooncalf. Its hide was gray, and it had slender legs and large feet. Its head swiveled back and forth as it took in its surroundings. Harry barely dared to breathe. When the mooncalf seemed satisfied that it was safe, it rose to its hind legs and began to move.

"Bloody hell," muttered Harry, gobsmacked to see the creature actually dancing. It was swaying and pivoting, feet making intricate patterns in the wheat field.

"Shush," scolded Luna. She reached into her bag and withdrew a small burlap sack.

"What is that for?" asked Harry.

"When the mooncalf retreats back to its burrow, we need to harvest its manure."

Harry nearly dropped his biscuit. "You're having me on," he hissed.

"Of course not, silly," said Luna. "Mooncalf manure is excellent when used as fertilizer."

Harry shook his head. "You brought me out here to scoop poop."

Luna giggled. "My hero," she cooed.

"Only for you, Luna," sighed Harry. "Only for you."
