Summary: Harry meets a little blond boy in the park.
It was Dudley's birthday, and the Dursleys were treating him to a day at Hyde Park. Mrs Figg was on holiday; therefore, Harry had been reluctantly allowed to join the excursion. Of course, that meant he got to hang back and watch as Dudders was lavished with ice cream, balloons and presents.
When Harry got bored, he wandered away to admire the ducks on a small pond.
"Father says those are Muscovy ducks," announced an imperious voice to Harry's left.
He turned his head to see a blond boy with pointy features looking back at him.
"Of course, they're not nearly so grand as peacocks," said the boy.
"Peacocks are brilliant," Harry agreed. He'd seen them once, on the telly. "They're very colorful," he added.
The blond boy sniffed. "Our peacocks are white," he said.
Harry goggled at him. "White peacocks?!"
"We only have the best," nodded the boy. He stuck his hand out in an adult fashion. "I'm Draco, by the way."
Harry had never shaken hands with anyone, but he accepted the boy's gesture without hesitation. He grasped Draco's hand and pumped it twice. "I'm Harry," he said. "Er, pleased to meet you."
"What are you doing here?" Draco asked. He withdrew some corn kernels from his pocket and tossed them to the ducks. Draco handed some kernels to Harry without missing a beat.
Harry wasn't sure how to react. He was unused to anyone sharing with him. "Th-thank you," he stammered.
"Well, don't just look at the corn," scoffed Draco. "Feed it to the ducks!"
Rather than be insulted, Harry simply laughed. He tossed his kernels onto the surface of the water, watching in delight as the ducks swarmed them and scooped each piece up in their bills.
"It's my cousin's birthday," Harry said, answering Draco's question. "I got bored watching him open all of his gifts."
"My father is away at a meeting, and mum said we could visit the park and look at Muggles."
"What are Muggles?" asked Harry. He'd never heard the word before.
Draco leaned close and lowered his voice to a conspiratorial whisper. "They're awful," he said. "You don't want to know."
Harry gave an involuntary shiver. He hoped he never, ever encountered any Muggles. They sounded horrible. Harry imagined them as large, beast-like things, covered with hair and sporting fangs that dripped with drool. He shivered again.
Harry and Draco tossed the last of the corn to the ducks. Draco reached into his pocket once again, but this time he produced chocolate. "These are from Honeydukes," he said, offering Harry a piece of candy.
Harry accepted it, casting a furtive glance over his shoulder to see if Dudley would come bearing down on him to demand the treat. He thanked Draco and hastily popped the chocolate in his mouth. It was fantastic. Harry had never tasted anything so wonderful.
"These are my favorites," Draco said, before eating one of the chocolates.
"Where's Honeydukes?" Harry asked. "I've never heard of it." He shoved the shiny silver candy wrapper into his pocket, rather than simply tossing it on the ground as Dudders would have done.
"It's in Hogsmeade," Draco replied. "You'll get to visit there when you go to Hogwarts."
Hogwarts was a funny name, and Harry opened his mouth to ask Draco what he was talking about.
"Draco!" came a woman's voice. "Come along, darling!"
Harry turned to see a lovely blonde woman beckoning Draco to her side. His shoulders slumped when he realized his new friend had to go home.
"I'll see you around, Harry," Draco said as he turned to go.
"Yeah," sighed Harry. "Thank you for the chocolate," he called to Draco's retreating back. He wasn't sure Draco heard him. Harry turned around and bit his lip; he was not going to cry. His attention went to the pond again, looking at the Mus-coh-vee ducks.
They were blurry.
