Lack of understanding, I suspect. Why would anyone burn people at the stake for the same offense, or hang them? Or crush them to death? Or try to drown them?
Yeah, which means I can see the argument for someone from say... before the modern age having issues with it, or someone who's just unfamiliar with magic, but after being here for any period of time, it seems kind of ridiculous for someone to distrust you based on that.
It does seem ridiculous. If it were solely me, I would take some issue with it, but not nearly so much as I do now.
But Lupin has acknowledged he feels there is a bias, as well.
I am making this conversation private. I think Lupin dislikes when I talk about him, I don't want Sirius Black adding his two cents, and Nygma is the reason behind much of this. I have absolutely no desire to talk to him.

Now I wish I hadn't creeped you out before. Normally I enjoy watching people cringe away from me, but now I think you may have been useful in convincing my warden to give me my powers back, or at least my staff. Besides, I can relate to you on the fear of being burnt at the stake for being a wizard, especially since I've nearly been burnt at the stake before.

I like you, but this is really long.
[THEN, LATER:]
I read it anyway, because the first sentence was horrible to me. Not in a badly-written way. The implication.

I- the entire idea of this boat is unconscionable to me now. If a person is their soul, their last and only unshakeable right should be to determine their own fate, with no one else pushing them one way or the other for - as a bargaining chip.
I was considering becoming a warden here if I were ever to graduate, because I've always tried to save everyone I could. I don't think I could do that now.
Everyone has a choice. You're all brought in at the ends of your lives; you can choose to change and take a second chance, or you can go on to whatever is waiting for you as your eternal reward. No one stays here for eternity.

I can no longer act out of altruism. I need a motivating factor to compel me to work with my enemy. It was another story all together with Mozenrath.
