I am starting wasping season, and I'm looking for new locations to collect and videotape wasps. Specifically, I am looking for this wasp (Polistes dominulus): ( wasp pictures )
We had one of that top one inside our house the other day, I think. (I am not an expedrt.) No sign of the nest, and only seen one so far. (Thank goodness, although I am a happy camper to find out that people *want* these.) I'll let you know if that changes.
So, at a casual view, without the nest, most people won't see the difference between these and a yellow jacket. The nest, however, is very different. If you see the nest, let me know, you're certainly within easy range to come grab it.
It does sting, but it's unlikely to do so unless you are within 6 inches of its nest, or come into contact with the individual.
