Your memory is holding up, despite the lack of notes. It's possible that the act of making them helped to secure these memories in your brain.

The missing notes aren't really as bad as the missing pictures. Part of the reason I hadn't gone through these pictures already is, not to sound melodramatic about it but it was too painful for me to go through the meagre pictures from the DSLR, mostly ruined by the lense blotch, and think about all the fantastic pictures I'd lost. ):

I can't imagine how fit those guides have to be, making that sort of journey repeatedly, often having to carry extra luggage as well!

The guides are a special breed. The guides on Kilaminjaro as well, the kind of arduous hiking they do regularly is very impressive!!
