Velvet has a tumour on his tummy. It's about the size of my thumb-nail and round - think large Malteaser! He saw the vet today and she thinks that it's most likely a tumour (it could also be some kind of cyst), but since it's fairly free-moving that it should be easy enough to remove. I had the option of leaving it, but the poor little man is only ( Read more... )

Hey hon. I've still got to reply to your email, I'm sorry. Not that I'm in the best of moods now, so I was going to wait until I'm able to think a bit better. I just had to empty cigarette butts out of my glass jars in the recycling box. My new neighbours are gross. Noisy neighbours are far worse though - I don't envy you ( ... )

try not to worry too much. i know that is hard to do. but i have a cat that has had one of those tumor/cyst/growth/whatevers on her tummy for he whole life. it has never caused her any trouble. we just keep watching it to make sure it doesn't grow or change....

anesthetic is always a risk. however, the newer ones are A LOT safer than those used even a few years ago, and it's easier to calibrate the exact amount needed, so less chance of overdosing the animal (or human for that matter).

i will keep you and your baby in my thoughts.

Thanks Jamie - I really appreciate that. Velvet's tumour is big enough that it's making it a little harder for him to move about, mainly because rats have such tiny legs! If it was somewhere else that wasn't bothering him I'd be very tempted to leave it for a while and see what happens.

I'm glad your cat has been okay with something similar though. :)

A couple of my previous rats have had anaesthetics for x-rays and a skin biopsy, but those were both very very short, so this is the first true operation any of them will have had. It's good to know that the newer anaesthetics are a lot safer though, and I totally trust the vets to look after him.

Velvet sends kisses (well, his version of that is climbing up you and curling up in the crook of your neck - most of the other rats settle for licking you). It's so weird seeing him acting normally but knowing that he's got this nasty lump thing bothering him too.
