A quick whip around

Looking at my list of books read, I'm quite far behind on talking about books of interest. Here's a quicky update on some of them:

Josephine Tey’s The Franchise Affair was another excellent mystery. This one is about a country solicitor whose peaceful life is interrupted when he called in to help two local women who are accused of kidnapping a ( Read more... )

I wasn't beaming at you when I realised I'd read it too quickly, but I guess that's a forgivable thing in a book :)

I loved Goudge as a teenager, yes! Consequently I'm rather fond of her - reminds me of my youth, doncha know! I can see the treacly sentimentality but I don't mind it, because I'm taken bck to the School Library and being old enough to choose my own books from the shelves! I was also reading Jean Plaidy - who could not be more different from Goudge!

I hadn't heard of Jean Plaidy so shall investigate :)

I'm terrible at disentangling my emotional attachment to books from a time period from my adult reaction to them. So I get what you're saying :)

Just finished reading Spiderweb for Two to Wildcat -- we went through all the Melendy books. Looking around now for the next read-aloud.

I can picture them being great read-aloud books. What are your options for the next reading book? I have just been talking about this book with someone, but My family and other animals is a great read-aloud IMO.

I'm thinking of either The Twenty-One Balloons or The Genie of Sutton Place.

I'm sure I read the Tey book, but it must not have made too much of an impression on me. I'll have to give King's Shield a try.

Nyah, just realised I didn't say King's shield was the third in a series starting with Inda. If you click on the smith tag I reviewed Inda at some point, am too lazy to hyperlink :)

I was one of the ones you told about King's Shield, but I will repeat the yay I gave then, and add one about the Melendy books. Spiderweb for Two is one of my favourites - though I'm not sure they aren't all in that category!

Elizabeth Goudge often makes me feel queasy, and yet there's almost always something in them that I love. Though I've never read the one you mentioned, it seems to hold pretty equally for the adult and children's ones I've read. Confusing.

I was going to say Spiderweb was a favourite but suspect it's because I read it the most recently :)

Interesting re Goudge. I shall stick to her children's books for a while and then maybe cautiously look at an adult one again :)
