and most of them are from my family's or friends' families' archives... and how many families just throw these things away, my god! it kills me just to think of them

You are so right. But some (as my father) keep the photos from the family so much as relics that they do not like showing them easily. My father does this and it breaks my heart because we live in different houses and he will not allow easily that i take some to scan them at home! :-) so ...
