Independence Day

Last night I went out to a field along many other of the city's denizens for live music and fireworks to celebrate the Fourth of July.  I don't know why the city celebrates it July 3rd, but whatever.  First there were a couple of bands that were country-bluegrassy-sounding.  I bought a funnel cake because I haven't tried it before, and set up my ( Read more... )

In Japanese (and maybe Chinese also?), "fireworks" is written 花火 -- literally "flower fire" or "fire flower." Always thought it particularly apt as I watched golden or rainbow mums exploding across the sky. :)

Agreed on the funnel cakes. Almost as bad as deep-fried twinkies at the county fair.

Actually I believe the Chinese translation is literally "fire flower" as well. (I'm positive I read it somewhere once and that my mom confirmed it. :-)

Some foods you have to try at least once in your lifetime -- preferably while you're young so it won't matter as much to your circulatory system! If I ever come across it, I'd try fried ice cream and turducken.
