I guess the book has answers

So, the Stargate Atlantis Season 3 Official Companion came in the mail today.  I admit I pretty much only read the parts concerning Beckett and Weir.  It was nice that Paul McGillion wrote the foreword for this one.  I also appreciated the honesty of all who were interviewed about certain characters' departures.  Well, some were as honest as they ( Read more... )

I think this is the worst reaction I've had to a replacement character. I'm not a hater, but still...

Agree, agree, agree. I mean they don't seem to know what to do with anyone this season? I don't think I love seeing any of the characters as much as I used to, and my passion for the show and the meaning it had for me is just gone. *cries*

I don't think Carter fits as a leader. She's always been part of a team dynamic, and having her kind of on her own just makes her seem (dare I say it?) boring.

And I think I would have been better if an extra who had been seen helping Beckett around the clinic had been cast. And is it just me, or does the show seem very white American-ish more so now than it used to?

pretty obvious how I feel about this, huh? emma_mage November 17 2007, 03:52:23 UTC
Confession: Still haven't seen "Sunday." I watched "First Strike" even though I hated seeing Weir practically blown up. I guess I feel that "Sunday" was the beginning of the end for the show I loved.

I'm kind of a spoiler-whore so I manage to keep up with the new eps even though I haven't seen any of them. From what I've read, it doesn't sound like Carter is doing anything different from Weir. This is harsh, but I think if TPTB can't do anything with the great Sam Carter as the leader of Atlantis, then they have to realize the fault is with them and not with the supposedly inherent problems of the character of Elizabeth Weir. However, I'm also afraid they'll give Carter all the shortcuts and let her do stuff they should have let Weir do.

Yeah, I even would've preferred to see that doctor from "Sunday" rather than Keller as the new CMO. We hadn't seen her before, yet I find her more believable as a doctor.

Perhaps the idea of bringing new writing blood in didn't occur to them?? :P

Maybe it was a budget/time thing when it came to finding new writers. But I also suspect the common trap of only wanting to listen to ideas that are similar to your own, especially when you're in charge.

I'm trying to comfort myself with having had 3 good seasons. At the same time though, it sucks because SGA's been around long enough for an attachment to grow, but not long enough for a decent fadeaway. I have no idea if that made sense. :-P

This is always the strange thing about being a fan of a show. You forget producing a TV show isn't a democracy. The producers are ultimately in charge and will make creative decisions according to their vision of the show, which may or may not be in line with the majority of the audience's preference. And it's tough to the old attachments when they make decisions that don't fit with your image of it.

As you said 3 seasons feels too short for the show to be this changed. But at least unlike the old days fanon can be alive and well on the web. :D

I've never been this, er, militant a fan before. *sheepish* All the other shows I watched were either squashed too early on anyway or had several seasons to change. All the recent stuff that's happened to SGA seems wholly unnecessary.

But yes, hooray for fanon for picking up the wasted potential. :-)
