What is it about BSG that results in it giving birth to more fantastic fanvids than any other show I've seen? Some combination of great color-saturated visuals, kinetic action, big themes, symbolism and (for me at least) a copious supply of interesting female characters. Not to mention talented vidders with something to say

more relevantly the third one is so contemporary social commentary (the whole ticking bomb thing in the first couple of frames). Though it also told me I need to watch more BSG to get the vid in terms of how the characters are used.
It seems to me like BSG is a show asking for meta, perhaps? And once again I am surprised you are not more into this show then you are.

Yeah, I've finally weakened! I wanted the tags available in my sidebar, although I still have it as plain as I can possibly manage.
You're right on both the social commentary and the meta fronts. That third vid is based on a whole lot of meta by cyborganize, which I haven't read yet because I want to give it the attention it deserves.
As for BSG, I find myself either enthralled or utterly uninterested by the show itself, but rarely anything in between, and rarely thinking about the issues raised once the show is over. I confess myself as baffled as you are. My very basic theory is that I find ensemble casts too distracting. In order to love a show I have to fall in love with one character. So if it were the Laura Roslin show or the Kara Thrace show, I might be smitten. As it is there's just too much stuff going on. Too plotty to love, perhaps?

I'm not great with large ensemble casts either; too many opportunities to not care; normally very inconsistent character development. (Not a comment on BSG for anyone reading).
What does make you want to write meta on a show? As there is clearly lots of scope. My tendencies appear to be I have to be spectacularly irritated.

Whereas I loved the slow pacing and the detail of the miniseries. It made the weight of doom and the individual impact seem all the greater. It's my desire for realism again... it definitely echoed what I know about the aftermath of real life disasters.

Obsession. But a non-uncritical sort of obsession, which is really the only sort that I can produce. It has to be a show that I can't stop thinking about... and that's all, really...
