It was cruel, he felt, watching Mary interact with Azazel while sensing Dean get closer, knowing that he would be there soon and witness the pivotal moment that shaped the rest of his life. It was cruel, Castiel understood, but Dean needed to know the truth and this was the only way he'd be able to find out.

Castiel turned away, stepped further into the darkness of the trees, when he heard the rumble of the engine and the sound of the tires on the gravel. He didn't need to look at Dean to feel the emotions washing over him - the betrayal, the anger, the overwhelming sadness at the realization that his lack of a normal life had gone further back than his father's quest for revenge.

When he met Dean - not the first time, when Castiel had pulled him out of Hell, but the second time, in human form - he was surprised by their connection. He knew that saving Dean made him Castiel's responsibility, that Dean's soul was his until the task that was set forth for him was completed, but Castiel hadn't expected to feel as Dean was feeling, like it were actually Dean's body he were inhabiting. All the pain at losing his mother, enhanced with the knowledge, now, that she had died because of her actions, and the deal for John's life had also made Sam a target, stirred up in Castiel a sense of pity he'd never expected to feel for a human.

It was time to go - Dean knew enough now. Castiel could feel Dean's agony as acutely as if it were running through his own veins. He knew that the ache could have partly been the vessel, but Castiel knew he couldn't pass it off when he placed his hand on Dean's shoulder, catching his tear-filled gaze, knowing that as much of a stab to the heart as learning the truth was, Castiel was only about to twist it deeper with what he had to tell him about Sam.

He could feel his vessel wanting to wait, to let Dean deal with this realization before being slammed with a new one, but Castiel had no choice. God needed Dean to know what they knew, and without seeing the path Sam was walking down, Dean didn't have the full picture.

Dean had to know; he was the only one who could stop it. Castiel just had to hope that they weren't too late, not just for humanity's sake or the world's, but for Dean's, as well.
