We ask the two college students!
Why do they think you should do higher education?
Why did you decide to go to college?
Tegoshi: I majored in psychology. I studied things like crime psychology and romance psychology and so I figured with that I could assist with theatrical productions. The fact is that the image I had of college was different from reality, but I'm still glad I studied a variety of things.
Shige: For me, I was part of an escalator school system** but I felt like I had no motivation to move forward. It was difficult enough to balance work with junior high and high school, but I felt like I wanted to spend time together with friends, so I went.
**Translator's note: escalator school system is where there's the same "school" for junior high, high school, and college. Sometimes they start off in elementary school too. For example, Ritsumeikan College has a Ritsumeikan junior high and a Ritsumeikan high school. Usually people who start out continue to the next school in the system.
Tegoshi, you chose to do distance learning. Why did you decide to do that?
Tegoshi: I did it so I could reasonably study and work at the same time. When I brought along my PC, I could study during concert tours. I consulted with my parents about it but I didn't say anything at all to my friends. My parents said, "Yuuya, you should do what you want to do." I made the decision at the end of my second year in high school.
Is it fun being a college student?
Shige: Whenever we'd have lots of tests, we'd do things afterward like go have lunch together. We'd eat things like hamburgers or curry or ramen. I would do all the research and find the good places to eat at.
Tegoshi: Since I didn't physically go to school every day, I didn't have fun moments like Shige (laughs). The tests weren't hard but the reports were, and I had to manage doing those and work at the same time. But, I suppose it's fine.
What was the biggest difference between high school and college?
Tegoshi: In high school there were female students! Also, I guess in college there's no mandatory physical education class?
Shige: Tegoshi, you're pretty superficial (laughs). Well, in college, you're forced to be on your own, right? You choose your classes yourself and you have to decide your own future.
Tegoshi: Whichever path you choose, isn't it difficult to try your best and be satisfied at the same time?
Shige: What do you mean by that?
Tegoshi: Don't think think it's hard to balance your dreams and your priorities while continuing your studies?
Shige: I see what you mean. Also, I'm happy I became a college student because I've made a lot more friends. It's interesting to be able to listen to different people's stories. Moreover, I'm glad I could capitalize on my role as a rookie lawyer in the drama "Hokaben" while studying as an undergraduate student.
It's the season for meetings and partings.
Tell us your memories of entrance and graduation ceremonies!
If you weren't doing your current work, would there be a part-time job you'd like to try?
Tegoshi: I'm envious of jobs where you can choose your own shifts. Then when my friends invite me places, saying, "Let's play!" I could say things like "Sorry, I chose to have my shift today" (laughs). Since I don't have conversations like, "How much are your wages?" or "Aren't wages higher at night?" I'd like to try and have them someday.
Shige: I think being the owner of a bookstore would be nice. It would also be nice to work at a coffee shop and make things like café au lait. I'd also work at a large-scale CD store. I want to wear one of those work uniform shirts.
Right now it's graduation and entrance ceremony season, so please tell us your memories of those!
Tegoshi: I went to the entrance ceremony with my parents.
Shige: I went by myself, but at the entrance ceremony they didn't have enough seats, so I had a feeling I'd have to wait outside. At the graduation ceremony too, if they said "it's a full house, so wait outside," what would I do!?
Tegoshi: Is that how it was!? For me, at my high school graduation ceremony, while we were singing "Aogeba Toutoshi (graduation song)," I cried. I remember from my first year in junior high when I started commuting to a private school, every morning my parents would wake up earlier than me, make a box lunch, and send me off with it. Now I cry remembering it. Thank you for those 6 years!
Shige: Really?
Tegoshi: Seriously. At my ceremony, I really did cry in the front row.
Shige: Ah, I see. I was telling everyone I'd be going to college, but it seemed normal to me, I guess.
You only have one year left in college. Are there any things you want to do during that time?
Tegoshi: For me, work is incredibly important, and I always want to do my best, and also I want to study at my own pace.
Shige: I still have have two more units to complete so I need time for that! My friends support me considerably through notes. When I graduate, I know I won't be able to see my friends at all, so I want to deepen my relationships with them. We'll become 4th year students and decide our careers, and everyone will go on trips I want deepen my friendships on all those trips!
