First, this was posted on Facebook today, and it sums up my feelings very well:

I’ve tried to stay out of this whole Chick-fil-A controversy just because I’m tired and I haven’t really felt like having a bunch of conservatives freak out and tell me Chick-fil-A should be able to exercise their first amendment rights. Nor do I have the patience to ( Read more... )

I saw all the hoopla at the Chick Fil-A restaurants yesterday and it depressed me; yeah, the guy has his "first amendment rights" to be an asshole, but supporting his rights like this is basically supporting hate. It's like standing up for someone in the Ku Klux Klan and "defending his right" (which he has) to his opinion.

I actually used that argument with Bryan. His wife, Cristina (my best friend), is half-black and half-white. She's faced discrimination her whole life. They're lucky in that there are no longer laws on the books preventing them from marrying, but there were only a couple of decades ago. So how is that any different than all of the current "defense of marriage" laws against gays? Needless to say, that definitely helped him see it from my side, though he still is a little too much on the opposite side of the issue for my taste.

It drives me CRAZY when people (especially black people) say this is not a civil rights issue. They used the Bible to justify slavery and then subjugation of blacks, just the same as they're doing to gays now. I know it's hard to overcome irrational feelings, but seriously, folks, it's just plain hate, born of fear of "otherness."
