That is indeed, in a nutshell, the argument most ita/shi shippers use. Madara does indeed make a lover comment, tho there's no proof that Shisui and the lover were the same person (though I tend to read it as this being the case with my OTP goggles, lol). However, people like Kakashi throw a wrench into this, and many sources say that it just has to be someone whose death will cause you extreme grief, not the person you necessarily value the most. :/ so yeah.
I guess I could see that being valid as well. How does Kakashi mess up the theory, though? I haven't read Gaiden (or whatever it's called) in a long time, but I don't remember anyone he would've valued above his comrade and friend.
I think she means that Kakashi managed to develop a Mangekyou Sharingan over the timeskip without seemingly losing any of his loved ones. That bothers me like nobody's business, I really hope Kishimoto explains himself at some point in the future. (But he probably won't.)
My personal explanation for that is this: Rin transferred Obito's eye to Kakashi right before he died. Therefore Kakashi saw Obito die and gained the Mangekyo. Then again, the first shot of Kakashi with his Sharingan doesn't show the Mangekyo..so maybe it was just laying dormant at that point? ...Okay, so maybe my theory doesn't hold much water after all. xD
LOL, I didn't even think about it for the longest time! You know that in the American tankoban volume, they translate 'lover' as 'lovers'? As in, plural? Uh...I'll just go with that being a translation mistake, shall I? I mean, c'mon, the kid was 13. -.-;; Who is that in your avatar, btw? He kinda looks like one of the guys from DBSK...'cept prettier. x)
'Lovers'? Whoa. I hope that was a translation mistake... Otherwise that would mean that Itachi was doing some serious incestuous pimping at only 13 years old. The kid may be a genius but geez! >_< Actually I don't know who it is, I was just googling some japanese dudes for reference poses and I found this one... xD
I like the Narupedia entry about the MS a lot for precisely this reason. Not only does it state that the death of the person closest to the Sharingan user is the trigger, but that it's not enough just to kill that person: you have to feel the emotion of that loss. Shit son, he had to feel it. Even before we knew Itachi was a good guy, I was pretty intrigued by this. Hell, that made it even weirder: creepy evil Itachi could feel?
Maybe it's not that Sasuke wasn't the closest person to him as that according to ~Uchiha lore~ you have to keep your brother alive so you can take their eyes for the Eternal MS. That's almost even more fucked up :\
I was so confused when I read that. I mean, jeez, how can you NOT feel it? If you have enough emotion to have a "precious person" to begin with, how can you not feel their loss? But is that an actual requirement for the Eternal Mangekyo (or whatever) or just something that's been done because it makes sense? That is, does the Mangekyo differentiate between your most precious person and your second most precious person if the first one is the brother whose eyes you'll need later? ...Wow, I think I just confused myself...
To me, it made sense that, despite Shisui's Most Precious Person status, Itachi was able to kill him and not Sasuke. Sasuke was a complete innocent, whereas Shisui was implied to be heavily involved in the drama. Sasuke could have been, like, Precious Person #7 or #8 or something and he'd still be safe, because of that veneer of innocence with which Itachi seemed to perceive him.
Still, whenever I write about this, I have to be careful to avoid making it into a ridiculous hierarchy inside Itachi's head. We don't go through real life thinking "______ is my Most Precious Person!" so I doubt it was going on in Itachi's mind either. LOOK AT YOU, MAKING ME OVERTHINK THIS RIDICULOUSNESS >( ogijsoidsjffosj.
You know who's the weirdest in this regard, though? Madara. Between rivalling it up with Hashirama, doting on Izzie, and obsessing about his hair creeping on his clan all the time, how did he even have any friends to kill?
That makes sense. LOL...Good point about Madara. Izuna had the Mangekyo too, so maybe they saw a mutual friend die or something? Question: Does it say anywhere that you have to /kill/ the one closest to you? Because all the article I read says is that that person needs to die.
It implies that they can just kind of...die, although in that case, it seems like a lot more Uchiha should have Mangekyou, and also, Maddie implied that only a few people per generation could acquire it.
But I do think Kakashi either killed someone or had someone die during the timeskip, because it doesn't make sense that the first time he used that Mangekyou in Naruto's presence was at that point, if he'd had it since Obito died. And if he HAD had it during the first season, why wouldn't he have used it against Itachi and Kisame?
Yeah, good point. Maybe Uchiha in general don't have many friends?...Okay, it's a long shot, but it could be possible, right? xD;; I forgot about that fight! Okay, fine, so Kakashi in all likelihood did not have the Mangekyo before the timeskip. Argh; I really hope Kishimoto goes into that!
I would like to think that, but well Sasuke obtained the MS when Itach died, but he als culd have obtained it by killing Naruto - so I guessit's just a person close to you...
I could see that working, though, because at that point Itachi was the only one he cared about-by "cared about" I mean he wanted to kill him, obviously, but still. Obsession like that means caring, just..in a different way than you'd think. Am I cracking?
