That is indeed, in a nutshell, the argument most ita/shi shippers use. Madara does indeed make a lover comment, tho there's no proof that Shisui and the lover were the same person (though I tend to read it as this being the case with my OTP goggles, lol).
However, people like Kakashi throw a wrench into this, and many sources say that it just has to be someone whose death will cause you extreme grief, not the person you necessarily value the most. :/ so yeah.

I guess I could see that being valid as well. How does Kakashi mess up the theory, though? I haven't read Gaiden (or whatever it's called) in a long time, but I don't remember anyone he would've valued above his comrade and friend.

I think she means that Kakashi managed to develop a Mangekyou Sharingan over the timeskip without seemingly losing any of his loved ones. That bothers me like nobody's business, I really hope Kishimoto explains himself at some point in the future. (But he probably won't.)

My personal explanation for that is this: Rin transferred Obito's eye to Kakashi right before he died. Therefore Kakashi saw Obito die and gained the Mangekyo.
Then again, the first shot of Kakashi with his Sharingan doesn't show the Mangekyo..so maybe it was just laying dormant at that point?
...Okay, so maybe my theory doesn't hold much water after all. xD

But didn't Kishi explicitly state that Kakashi got the MS during the 3-year timeskip? He unveiled it all dramatically during the fight with Deidara in Suna. Maybe he's just so awesome he can bypass those ridic Uchiha laws.

He seriously said that? How did I miss him saying that? *perplexed*

It's the impression I got, given that he never used it before the skip. Maybe it was Rin who died? She's dead now, but maybe she was alive during the first part and we just... didn't... know about it.

That'd be so annoying...but it would have to be her, wouldn't it? Who else did Kakashi care about? Hmm...
