I had all my care done at a teaching hospital, and I always let the noob knock themselves out, but coming at me with large sharp sticks ? No. I would never sign up for that.
Well, if you've ever had a central line or a joint aspiration or your belly tapped, this is along the same vein (har har), only now they can ACTUALLY SEE WHERE THEY ARE GOING. There were two interns in clas today--they looked so young. So...innocent! One was shocked to learn and couldn't understand how we (the older docs) ever could do it "blind". :D

This class was specifically for emergency sonograms and guided procedures. I was trained to place catheters into the large, central veins and arteries of the neck, chest, arms and thighs by doing it by landmarks of the body and by feel, or doing it "blind" as some would put it. Towards the end of my residency, I learned to use a sonogram machine to help with guiding the needle in place. Today I learned to do it better and to use it to access and evaluate other parts of the body, such as chest and abdomen and heart. IT WAS SO FUN! Also, it was interesting to be with some baby docs and here their shock and incredulous reaction to hearing how we did it old skool. They didn't think it could be done! I got to visualize myself and sonogrammed my own eyeball. Freakin' cool.
