Original Fiction

A few years ago, before discovering fanfiction, I tried writing original fiction. Didn't work. Because I am not good in original fiction, or because I was an inexperienced writer? Probably a bit of both.

Then I discovered fanfiction and fell in love with it. It was 2005, I think. In fact, I started writing fanfiction before I knew what it was. *lol ( Read more... )

What if I start, and then fail?

Sounds to me like this question is really the crux of the matter, and a question only you can answer. Can you live with it if you do fail, or if you don't try, can you live with never knowing if you might have succeeded?

Personally, I think you should give it a shot... you never know where it might lead, and that can be an interesting road to travel. :)

There is just one answer, of course. And I know it. Perhaps I just needed to hear it "said out loud"? Or, in this case, see it "written black on white"?
Oh dear... *laughs at self* Usually, I am not too emotional. But writing this post made me sort of "soft", if you understand what I mean, although I can't really explain why, and now your answer brought tears to my eyes... Thanks for being here for me, dear friend. *hugs*

Oh my! I hope in a good way! *g* But I know what you mean. These sorts of soul-searching entries can reveal a lot, can't they. *hugs* But well worth it if by the end you know your answer.

(And I had to laugh at Inzilbeth's very pragmatic, "If it's rubbish, you can always hit delete!" *g*)

Yep, in a good way! :)

Well, you can only try. For me, the question always answers itself if the idea doesn't go away. I basically never have an idea and then sit down five minutes later to write. I *always* let things simmer. If it still interests me two months later, then it's worth pursuing. So the only "advice" I can give now, is wait and see.

I think if a story is in your brain it has to be told, like a child of your thoughts waiting to be born. So try, what does it matter if it doesn't work? You will have tried.

I'm looking forward to your Mary Sue story.

Give it a shot; if the plot bunny's in your head it won't go away until you do SOMETHING with it.

But don't stress over it; if you aren't planning to publish it conventionally, then it doesn't have to be perfect.

I know - the bunny won't go away. So I'll start. And you make a good point - it really doesn't have to be perfect.
