Also, now that I have material to compare it to, cramps do indeed bear a resemblance to early labor pains.

Interestingly, the perceived physical size of the pain isn't much different. In spite of the much larger size of my uterus during labor, the size and site of the pain felt the same.

curiosity, navel-gazing

I always wondered about that.. I have awful, awful cramps, and when I have them sometimes I honestly feel like I'm in labor, though I would then say to myself 'no, labor's probably so much worse'.

(I'm such a scaredy cat over pain, but I want to have a baby so much, so it's a conflict XD)

Labor is much worse, but bad cramps feel like the early stages. Fortunately, being in labor gives you access to some really heavy-duty painkillers.

Also, I may not be able to speak for the degree of pain for everyone - I really had a nightmare experience of birthing. It may not hurt as much for other people, or may be more bearable for the shorter time period. It still makes me grumpy when people mention three or four hours of labor. Dammit.

You didn't come cheap! No time to administer painkillers, and I didn't want to dope you up. 24 hours of 2 minute long breathtakers spaced by 30 seconds to grab some more air! What a ride!

I have the evil cramps from hell when I ovulate. Then some for the first two days of so then it dies down.

Compared to "the early years" aka puking/migraines/cramps from hell x10/endless bleeding, however, I am not bitching.

Well, it's logical - both are uterine contractions.
