It depends on the American. Some of us are pretty sensitive about it, yeah; that whole idea of "losing" a war? We haven't really figured out how to deal with that yet.

The word "hobo" IS hilarious xD. Gelato is a word we use for fancy ice cream that's theoretically Italian-style... It's usually a little less creamy than normal ice cream.

No, I'm totally with you about how history lessons should cover stuff that happens outside of your own country. But it seems to be the case even within a country that you study the stuff that happened near you (or at least, it is here).

Oh! And I forgot to mention:

I think that a lot of the reason that the men here don't like to talk about the wars was exactly BECAUSE they were fought so far away from home. They came back from the war, to their wives and children, and didn't want to mix the two worlds. At least, that's the impression I've gotten. They just wanted all that stuff to stay in Europe.

This is fascinating! And kinda funny, because guys, for a 2000 years old European nation, you've been invaded much less than all the rest of us (it's that damn channel...XD)

God, I thought the English were very proud of their empire, I truly did. I've also been taught the English and Russians were the true heroes of WWII, but that's just because, as Hetalia tells us, we aren't very fond of Americans either, and I can just see Antonio helping Arthur write that curriculum as wellXD
(my teachers were also probably compensating for all that American films try to tell youXD)

Also amusing is how similar, in a way, most Europeans are, when teaching historyXD
(and I didn't know you didn't say those words so much! I'm...disappointed *hides in embarrassment*)

Yeah. We're taught that we're the heroes-- and that whole business about isolationism was just kind of a phase we were going through... But that's because, seriously, Hetalia has it right about America's hero complex ><. Korea? Heroes! Iraq? Heroes! (We're still as a country trying to deal with Vietnam, and Iraq is moving in that direction too, although there are still a lot of people who will swear up and down that everything's fine.)

...the times when we did bad shit-- lots of stuff in Latin America comes to mind-- we don't learn about. But maybe that's normal?

Pfff, you learn the good things and we learn the badXD. Compensating? I think you do that definitely because of your youth as a country. You are still reticent to hear about what you've done bad, but we're so past that point we carry guilt for what we've done

I can see that. We... we like to see ourselves as the good guys, we really, really do. If there's one statement that I can make on behalf of all three hundred million of us, it's that. Backing all your foreign policy with No, We Were Just Trying To Help, Really! can be dangerous, I know, but-- I believe from the bottom of my heart that we as a country mean well, even if we fuck it up royally.

I've always felt that the fact you guys actually mean well irritates Europe even more than if you meant bad. There's a generous dose of admiration for upfront honest meanness around here, since that's what we've always done around this part of the world; the feeling that "at least we don't disguise it as anything else than what it is" or soemthing like that.
The feeling that you're (willfully, many believe) deluding yourselves that you're doing something good is what I've heard criticised most around here.

Of course, chibi's feelings and experiences may be very different, because UK is totally different from the rest of Europe when it comes to USA xDDDDDDDDD

"Haha, I guess Europeans are united in their common goal of taking America down a peg XDDD"

WE KNEW IT ALL ALONG

(Really, I've got to stop using this ubiquitous "we"... OTHER AMERICANS? I KNOW YOU'RE THERE!)

Oh, you can, believe me. We manage! Spain has been invaded by Rome, Carthago (or however you write that in EnglishXD), visigoths, your pirates, Turkey's pirates, the moors (who were Turkey's cousins or somethingXD), France and...I guess that's it? But Spain was formed by many different kingdoms, very similar to Scotland, Wales and England, and they fought like crazy till the 1400s, when they were united. We've also been dicks and tried to invade around enough that we feel it balancesXD

Though maybe that explains why Europe went out and pretty much colonised the world - we were all just sick of being invaded ourselves XDI think you're onto somethingXD ( ... )

God, please, don't shut up! I'm immensely curious about England, since that's the place I plan to live in in the future...I didn't know you people were ashamed of your empire! I think it's very awesome, you're badass. But then again, here we are also ashamed of ours, so I guess it's something inevitable? But I love the way you explained itXD

(I always say that picture is my favourite Hetalia pic everXD)

...and we'll swear forwards and backwards that WE NEVER HAD COLONIES, WE WERE ONLY HELPING, OK, PHILIPPINES?

That's interesting to hear that your two countries don't talk about the empire business too much. Do you have a sense for why? (You know. Aside from the, uh, repression and occasional genocide. Or is that the reason?)

No, no, actually, we talk about the Spanish empire a lot, extensively and with great detail, form begining to end. We just do it like "look, we were so so bad, and they were so so good". We have a lot of guilt about it (not me, though, since I didn't do anythingXD). Spain carries a big conquistador complex nowadays that we want to desperately get along with everyoneXD

Oh, and Phillippines is like the bastard child we never talk aboutXD. Most Spanish don't even know we once owned anything "in Asia"...but even when it was a colony of ours, we didn't care for it. The golden child of the Spanish colonies were always the Flemish Netherlands and Argentina (maybe Venezuela and Cuba too)

The Flemish Netherlands! *scurries off to Wiki*. Yeah, I admit, I have NO idea what the hell is going on with that whole area. I think it's because there are too many words... Dutch/Holland/Netherlands/wtf?

Most Americans (to my knowledge) don't know we had anything to do with the Philippines at all. But that's because we did bad stuff there, and we try not to think about it.

(There are parts of America-- mostly the rich liberal north-eastern parts-- that have that "everyone else does things right and we do things wrong" attitude about them. That's something that started developing here after Vietnam, I think. But more on that when I actually figure out what comment thread we were talking in...)
