I don't have time for this...

I've been getting invitations to join Facebook for a few months now; I've got at least three friends/acquaintances who have accounts and have been "asking" me to join. Despite my technophilia, I had never investigated what Facebook actually *IS* up until last night ( Read more... )

hahahaha...

I hate Facebook with a passion; the only thing that is worse than Facebook, in my opinion, is MYSPACE...*shivers*

Truth be told: I've never looked at what MYSPACE has to offer, either.

Just not my thing.

It's not the end of the world if Facebook is not for you. And for the record, I've never asked you to join, in my own recollection at least.

Knowing your own mind is valuable.

For me, I find Facebook useful in business contexts... I network with people and use it as a publicity platform, rather than playing all the silly games on it. You don't have those needs, so you are right to choose not to spend your time there.

As for your dream, it sounds fairly similar to a few I've had lately. Unpleasant, indeed.

I know it's not the end of the world... but I've already gotten an e-mail from one of the folks who was sending me invitations, asking me what was wrong with my account. They were more than a little shocked by my reply.

And for the record: No, you never invited me to join Facebook. I was aware you had an account, but you are *NOT* one of the three people who had been sending me invitations.

I suppose one could say that I made my decision because "I knew my own mind". I actually would have phrased it as "I know my limitations".... but your way is just as accurate & more upbeat.

I can see how Facebook can be a valuable tool/asset for you... but your career path is completely different than mine. I don't have serious plans to "move up the ladder" within Civil Service, and even if I did there are far better ways for me to make professional contacts within Civil Service than Facebook.

Yes, for better or for worse, I am now a member of the entertainment industry, which is where Facebook and MySpace and Twitter become handy.

You being in civil service means that "social" networking is less useful. "Pro" sites like LinkedIn are probably your better bet.

Glad you like my "Know your own mind" mantra.

PS: I hate only being able to remember my unpleasant dreams. I'm sure I have pleasant dreams too, but for the past few decades I only remember my dreams if I am woken up in the middle of one. I will frequently wake myself up from a bad dream, but I can't ever remember deliberately waking myself from a good dream.... which means I completely forget about the nice dreams. Not a fair trade, if you ask me.

I'm sorry about your nightmare. :( I guess your subconscious is trying to deal with life crap. I hate those dreams where you end up lost in a place where in waking life you usually have no problem getting around in!
I didn't stick around long on facebook either. I really didn't see much of a point to it.

You and I will probably have a discussion at some point about revisiting Facebook, in light of your writing.

... I suppose we should.

I'm not going to lie -- I'm not enthused by this news. You know me: I don't like change. But if you think this change will help, then I'll take you at your word.

We will go slowly, I promise.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think that the changes that upset you most are:

[1] changes that occur rapidly with little/no time for you to get used to them

[2] changes that are thrust upon you rather than the changes you choose.

Am I on to something here, or am I offbase?

Bullseye. Although I should mention that I frequently second-guess my own decisions when it comes to making changes. In recent years I have usually managed to stick with my decisions… but that's not to say that I don't get scared.
