Some Updates

Ohmigosh, it's been FOREVER since I've been on here.

Blame a broken hard drive and the incredibly protracted process of getting that replaced and getting things (more or less) recovered. We learned the hard way that automatic backups don't back everything up. (We didn't lose much; just access to some emails--we have the emails, we just can't read ( Read more... )

Thanks! Hopefully it will make up for the skirt, where nothing is matched! (Although I did remember to cut all of the pieces right-side-out.) The interesting (well, to costuming nerds) thing is that matching patterns is a sort of modern thing. In period, they often cut and pieced the fabric as was most economical, so some existing garments have the designs going every which way.

I'm actually thinking about doing a tutorial on matching a design across a seam. I have a really cool technique that's loads easier than other methods I've seen.

A cartographer! So that's how they get those maps done. I want one!!

Man, you sew some crazy cool stuff.

Oh, the maps are beyond cool. When I get the OK to share, I'll post the link to the artist's portfolio.

And thanks on the sewing! I WANT to sew cool stuff; let's see how much cool stuff I actually manage to FINISH! Ha! Yesterday I decided I didn't like how the piping came out, so I almost ripped the entire bodice apart to redo it almost from scratch. A sensible needlework friend talked me down, thankfully! It would have been ok, but it would have added another week or more to the project! I keep reminding myself I need to go *forward,* not backward.

I would have been all, "Well, I take my story apart to make it work better, why not take apart this sewing project?" Funny. Glad your needlework buddy talked you out of it.

I keep wanting to take up some kind of knitting/crocheting/sewing project -- learn how to quilt from Grandma, say -- but I hear you on starting stuff and never finishing, I'm the same way! And I guess I have plenty on my hands with the chickens. I'm going to get two Red Sex Link chicks when they show up at the feedstore -- see if the Buff Orpington hen will foster them. I can't wait for spring!!

You could make sweaters for the chickens--they would probably knit up more quickly. (ducks)

Believe me--I definitely did look at the bodice and think, "If this were a chapter that weren't working, I wouldn't just let it go." And usually I never regret ripping apart a garment to fix something that's bugging me. But in this case, I was going to end up with exactly the same finished result no matter what I did, so I picked the one that involved less work!
